This is generally a good read and overview of Apollo 8, but it really does a disservice to George Low. Time Magazine, whom Kluger works for, wrote in the January 3, 1969 issue (the one with the three Apollo 8 astronauts on the cover as Men of the Year) that "the one person most responsible for the flight was a Vienna-born engineer named George Low". It goes on to say: "Other, higher-ranking officials in NASA agree that had it not been for Low's zeal, there would have been no Apollo 8 to the moon." You wouldn't really know it from reading this book.Kluger states that Low just gave voice to a brainstorm that apparently wasn't associated with any one person. In fact, it was Low alone out of the four hundred thousand men and women working on Apollo who had the foresight and bold imagination to re-conceptualize the mission. How he was able to see what others could not and keep the Apollo program on track would have made for an interesting story within a story. We are fascinated by how the visionary mind works when discussing people like Jobs or Musk, but we get none of that here.Low was uniquely qualified having been the first Chief of Manned Space Flight, the chairman of the committee that provided the analysis that led to Kennedy's challenge to go to the moon, and the person who took over as the Apollo Spacecraft Program Manager after the Apollo 1 fire. His story gets lost in these pages.Although now out-of-print, the PBS documentary American Experience: Race to the Moon: The Daring Adventure of Apollo 8 does a wonderful job of explaining his role in the context of the overall space program. It is well worth your time to try to find a copy.

I have read perhaps 30 books about Apollo. This is quite possibly my favorite of the bunch. The writing makes you feel like you were right there for every event, every conversation. You feel the emotion during the launch, when they enter lunar orbit, when they read from Genesis, when they are able to leave lunar orbit and head home.

I agree with many of the reviews posted here, but I've also found the book to be not as good as I hoped. It is not as technical as it might have been, certainly not in the league with the author's previous book Lost Moon. It is, as some reviews say, character driven, with less emphasis on what is happening and more on what people are saying and feeling. Again, not in a bad way, but it makes the book seem less comprehensive than it might have been. The book is really more about Frank Borman than about Apollo 8. Also I have found a number of small, perhaps trivial errors in the book. Most people would more than likely not even notice them, but as someone who worked at Launch Complex 39 for almost 35 years it seems to indicate to me a bit less research on the author's part than ought to be done. However, for the general reader, I can very much recommend this book.

I worked on the Apollo space program. I was employed as a test engineer for a NASA subcontractor on the Lunar Module (LM.) My boss was the Program Director for our part of the LM. That gave me direct and personal access to many of the situations described by Jeffrey Kluger in his book, "Apollo 8: The Thrilling Story of the First Mission to the Moon Kindle Edition."I was there when the red "Hot Phone" rang in my bosses' office. It was NASA notifying us of difficulties in landing the Apollo 11 LM due to a real-time failure of the LM's guidance computer. They had more questions than answers. I was there when the red phone rang again. It was NASA reporting to us what the world would soon learn--Apollo 13 had encountered a serious failure on its way to the moon. Again, more question than answers were provided. And I knew that we ourselves had serious questions as to how the Apollo Command Module was designed and built even before the Apollo 1 fire.Much of the space program in general and the Apollo Moon Program specifically, has been romantized by the media and by NASA itself. Fantasy often enhances and even replaces fact. Not here. Kruger presents a factual, accurate and entertaining narrative of the space program focusing largely on Frank Borman and Apollo 8. His retelling of the management and construction failures by North American (makers of the Apollo Command Module) are right on line with the reports that I heard concerning the tragic Apollo 1 fire. His descriptions of the LM and its strange, but effective designs are right on target.About the only thing that in his book that made me cringe was his negativity towards my fellow West Virginian and famous pilot, Chuck Yeager. However, while I am well aware of Yeager's accomplishments, I never had the pleasure (or not) of meeting the man. So, who knows? Maybe this is accurate as well. Maybe Yeager was arrogant and spiteful as described. However, I can say that using the cliche of "page turner" is not erroneous for the book. It's a non-functional book that reads like a novel. I had trouble putting it down! Even if you weren't around during the days of the Apollo Project and even if space exploration is not your thing, "Apollo 8: The Thrilling Story of the First Mission to the Moon Kindle Edition" is sure to be a worthwhile, entertaining and informative read.

This book tells the story of the Apollo 8 mission, the astronauts and how they came to be on the mission. I was a young child during the mission, and while I do remember it, my memories are not the clearest, and so I appreciated the chance to read about the mission with the perspective of an adult. My father was a software developer for NASA and made key contributions to the success of the space program, so I grew up with a strong interest in it and reading as much about it as I can. Apollo 11 is the most celebrated mission, and rightly so, but if Apollo 8 had not succeeded, Apollo 11 would not have happened the way it did. This book gives Apollo 8 its due.The prose is engaging, not dry; it is not overly technical. Key technical concepts that are essential to the story are explained clearly.
