I will say this first. I passed all my written exams. (I applied to three different police departments). So did reading this book help? I'll say yes. But it was more of a refresher read from what I learned in High school. And that was from over 15 years ago. If you are of average to above normal intelligence. Taking a quick read through this book will definitely help reinforce everything you should have learned in grade school. So buy this book and read through the whole thing, just so you have some peace of mind that you actually made an effort towards a very rewarding and life changing career. Good luck!Side note. I also purchased the Norman Hall's police exam preparation book. Buy both. Don't be stingy. Invest in yourself.

Of all the police exams this pretty much encompasses what most of them will test you on, that being said you really don't need a booklet to study but if you want to over prepare like I do this is one of the best out there!

I am currently taking several courses in Buddhism, and one is taught by the author of this book. I just started that course and her teaching style seems down to earth and enjoyable, but I was slightly annoyed when I saw this book would be required reading for the class. The reason was simply that I've read many books on how to meditate before, and I am taking these classes to advance my knowledge of Tibetan Buddhist practices specifically and felt like this was a slight step backward in my knowledge. I based my entire assumption on the title "How To Meditate". But I dutifully ordered a used copy of it and prepared myself for yet another introduction to meditation book. Turns out the book is fantastic, but I have to say I dislike the title a lot. It doesn't do the book justice and it's such a generic title that I thought I had it all figured out before I even got it. I would have absolutely passed by this book if I hadn't been required to purchase it for the class.Yes, the book does offer instructions on how to meditate. And she does so in a very down to earth, accessible way. Plain language, and a very direct "how-to" that is missing from many other meditation intro books. How to sit, what to do with your eyes, hands, etc., what strange thoughts or distractions may occur and how to address these problems when they happen, and more. But there is SO much more to the book that I never would have discovered based on the title or even the description, and it's that other content that makes me especially happy. The first two chapters cover the how-to basics for the most part. The rest of the book is mostly specific Tibetan Meditations; meditations on the mind, analytical meditations, and visual meditations. Then another entire section on specific Tibetan prayers and other devotional practices. This was exactly what I wanted to learn in the course but did not expect from this book based on the title.I feel it's somewhat important to stress that these are meditations and prayers that are mostly from the Tibetan tradition. That's not to say that anyone can't enjoy them, you certainly can, and the instruction is presented in a way that anyone can benefit from, but some of the references might be very new or even strange if you aren't already practicing the Tibetan tradition or even in Buddhism at all. For example, she includes meditations on Tonglen, meditation on Avalokiteshvara, Vajrasattva purification, etc. It's the very thing I love about the book since I've been trying to learn and compile these exact practices from various sources, but I'm not sure it would be the best choice for someone who just wants a secular introduction to basic meditation. That's why I dislike the title so much; people like me wanting specific Tibetan practices will easily miss it, and those just wanting a basic intro to general meditation might end up with a bunch of Tibetan stuff they didn't really need. It's kind of like buying a book called "How to Cook" but finding out it's mostly about how to cook Thai food.Back to the instruction aspect: she adds to the basic instruction in the first two chapters by offering more specific instructions at the beginning of the various practices, and then gradually incorporates what you have learned from previous chapters as you progress through the book. So you learn specific meditations, practices and prayers AND get instruction on how to do them. It's easy to google the names of any of these Tibetan practices and get lots of results, but not many that include HOW to do the practice in addition to the recitations and visuals. And she simplifies it nicely so it's suitable for beginners to these practices. Chapters are short and easy to digest. This book is going to be a huge help in aiding me to establish a more disciplined set of practices, there are some for daily use (refuge prayer, dedication of merit, etc), others for special situations like times of illness (Medicine Buddha), etc.So I love the book and am very happy to have an easy to understand guide that teaches these practices and am looking forward to learning the ones I don't know and incorporating them into my routine. I still think it should be named something more accurate like "How To Do Tibetan Practices" or "A Collection of Tibetan Buddhist Meditations and Prayers Including Instructions" or something along those lines. But if you don't mind that they are Tibetan Buddhist oriented, or if you are looking for a Tibetan Buddhist specific book that covers basic meditations and prayers, this will be a wonderful resource. I'm very glad I was required to purchase this, it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

Two years ago, I developed a very serious interest in techniques for prayer and meditation. There were no sources of support in my particular locale, so I went on a search through Amazon to find the best practical guide to meditation. At that time, I had no special interest in the belief systems supporting particular approaches to either prayer or meditation. It made no difference whether the approach was Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, or secular. I just wanted a down to earth, nuts and bolts kind of book that gave me guidance on the actual practice of something like meditation.This was, and is today, the best book that I could find. It eventually served as an entry point into Mahayana Buddhism and, more broadly, into the tradition of contemplative mysticism within both Buddhism and Chistianity. Ms. McDonald typically begins each of her chapters on a particular kind of meditation with an explanation of the underlying reasons for it, followed by a careful walk-through of the beginning, middle, and ending. Although she introduces Buddhist concepts, she also keeps her framework open-ended and suggests where meditators might depart from a strict Buddhist style when the concepts (like reincarnation) seem too forbidding.After introductory material, the book broadly address samatha (mindfulness, focussing), vipassana (insight meditation), and vajrayana (the use of imagery in meditation). She makes things very easy to understand, and buying into her approach really doesn't require that one become a Buddhist. The only thing she did not address was planning out a sequence of meditations in some kind of logical fashion. But this is a minor point.The book is not a "read" as such. It's more of a handbook to be consulted in the course of establishing meditative practices. I find that I have never really stopped reading the book. I just keep re-reading passages for clarification, and embarking on new passages when I feel I am ready.The usual advice for someone meditating is to work with a teacher or guru. That isn't always possible, though, and in those cases this book is the next best thing. Those who buy this book might also visit the website for the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayanan Tradition. It used to be the case that you could obtain free of charge audiobooks of Ms. McDonald conducting classes on meditation.Ms. McDonald is a magnificent teacher. I'm pleased to be her student even though we have never met, and I hope that my own feeble efforts at meditation eventually honor her.

Reading this book has been a real inspiration. I have a better knowledge of how to properly meditate and i like how it teachings me different ways to meditate. While the size of this book may be small, it contains loads of information about Northern Ireland. I purchased because we are limited on weight for packing and I didn't want to tear the Northern Ireland pages out of my other travel book. This is perfect and has what I need to accompany on-the-fly internet searches.

I usually take a Rick Steves book with me whenever I travel in Europe. His suggestions on where to stay, eat and local transportation is pretty good.This book is good "how to" if you are traveling via train and public transportation. However if you are driving a car in Ireland (the best way to see it) then the information is a little light on towns not connected via rail. What towns to use as a base for sight-seeing certain areas. His Rick Steves Ireland is much better for planning a driving tour of Ireland.bbeer

I was disappointed that this book did not include County Armagh. It includes only the Belfast Area, Bangor, Portrush & the Antrim Coast, and Derry and County Donegal.

Very informative and will accompany on our travels. Love Rick Stevens books. Also have the Ireland book.

Very few photos and only black and white photos. Wanted colorful photos of Ireland. Disappointed.

Very disappointed in this book. While titled Northern Ireland out of 103 paged book only 5 were devoted to Donegal . Though Steve's states it is one of the most 'ruggedly beautiful" and that "culturally the county shines" the information only give one driving tour and no information of alternative transportation besides auto. No mention of Donegal City or Letterkenny or other towns for visits a mention. Not at all to Rick Steven standards snd would not recommend this book to anyone who is interested in traveling to County Donegal.

You can't go wrong with a Rick Steves book; I think they're the best guide books, but I would always supplement any any guidebook with tripadvisor.com

I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this book, but when I received it, I fell in love! It really is everything I want to know about eggs. It looks and feels like a little encyclopedia, which I love. The whole idea is just adorable. Perhaps my favorite part about the book is how there are pictures of egg dishes from all around the world and their corresponding recipes. I even found the recipe for "Taiwanese Oyster Omelet," one of my favorite childhood dishes. Awesome! Flipping through the pages, it blows my mind to see how many recipes there are- simply centered around eggs- and I really am eggcited to try them all out. Really glad I made this purchase!

I'm a huge fan of the two Lucky Peach cookbooks edited by Peter Meehan, and thought (mistakenly) that this would follow the same "cut to the chase" rationale of cooking eggs in its many guises, with time-tested shortcuts and frank advice, which is very helpful to a ham-handed cook such as me. This book, however, takes the exact opposite approach, offering a lot of "as told to" storytelling and reminiscence-filled introductions, sprinkled with cultural, linguistic, and etymological factoids from whence the recipe came -- which is all fine if you want to read a definition and examine its sources -- but then proceeds attempts to dash through the recipe (including all of its components, like whipping up a batch of homemade salsas, gravies, and sauces) in condensed (and densely written) sequence. The experience might be different for those who've spent years cooking eggs, and wants to know the many exotic destinations their established skills can be taken, but when I use this cookbook it will be purely as a reference, to identify an interesting egg-based recipe, then track down a recipe (or the accompanying condiment's recipe) that's more user-friendly.

I am so sad that this is Lucky Peach's last book, but I am so glad it's about eggs. It was released just as I had gotten a new flock of backyard chickens, so I had a LOT of extra eggs. I really loved learning about different types of eggs (I'm a hoarder of facts and information), as well as the recipes. So many were unlike anything I would have ever thought of! I appreciated that many variations were tested before the authors published their favorite.

Ya gotta love a cookbook who's egg benedict recipe includes the recipe for the english muffin! This is the best cookbook I've gotten in a loooong time.

I was a huge fan of Lucky Peach, so I was delighted when this book was published. I love browsing all the ways to cook the most basic of ingredients, and feel like my culinary repertoire has benefitted greatly from reimagining the egg.

This is just a delightful book. So many of the recipes and vignettes make me smile. I want to cook my way through the whole book, which for most of the recipes, won't be too daunting a task. I can see several of the recipes entering permanent rotation in our house. I already loved eggs, but this has made me a lifelong devotee.

Neat book about eggs. Follows Lucky Peach formula, and like the magazine, has interesting facts and recipes with one of my favorite things: eggs!

I bought this as a Peace Corps Volunteer before going to Ethiopia in 2012. It was cool to look at the places nearby that I could visit, and it did find some use when my Dad came to visit me and we were looking for good hotels in Arba Minch. But to be honest, my best resource for travel and hotel recommendations was my fellow Peace Corps Volunteers who lived in the area.If you're a PCV about to leave for Ethiopia, I would suggest investing in the phrase book and leaving this book at home.But if you're a tourist heading to Ethiopia and don't know anyone who already lives there, I would definitely pick up this book. It all depends on what you're using it for.

Exactly what I wanted! Exactly what I got!

This book was disappointing. Very very few pictures, outdated visa requirements about yellow fever vaccinations (which I've read elsewhere have never been a requirement), not much basic travel information (like country weather, dress, currency) which is usually covered well in Lonely Planet books, like LP China, for example. The writers are clearly European, but their strong style leaves me wondering what nuances I may not be picking up on as an American. These omissions make me less confident about the other facts and recommendations given in the book. None of the writers are female, which also makes me wonder if the places they felt safe would be comfortable to a female traveler. All in all, this book was not as thorough and well researched as other Lonely Planet books I have read and used.

A wealth of information for my upcoming trip to Ethiopia. However, the font/type is so small that it is impossible to read without a magnifying glass. I always buy Lonely Planet guide books for everywhere I travel, and none of them have this problem. Perhaps the problem arose because they tried to put information about two countries into one book.

Great guidebook. I really like that it includes Djibouti and Somaliland.
