"The line" in Australian cricket has been a subject of major controversy. It appears that only Australian cricketers know its location. They feel free to behave as disgracefully as possible on what they regard as the right side of the line, but woe betide any opponent who crosses the line. Thus McGrath's asking Sarwan "What does Lara's dick taste like?" was apparently on the right side of the line, but Sarwan's response "Ask your wife" crossed the line.This issue of "the line" reached a climax in the recent SA-Aus test series, when even the Australian team acknowledged that blatant cheating in direct contravention of the laws, exacerbated by a ridiculous cover up attempt and sanctioned by the team's captain and vice-captain crossed the line. These two incidents feature prominently at the start of the book, but the major part of the book relates not to conduct of the Australian players but to the incompetence of their administrators.The book is a savage attack on the administrators, supported by ample evidence, although (perhaps like Australian cricketers) a little over-aggressive. A more clinical and less hostile attitude would have made the case better. The book's conclusion seems to be that the cheating was induced by the incompetence of the administrators. I don't buy that. In recent years, the Australian team has had to face up to the retirement of a staggeringly great talent pool. The West Indies had to do the same after the 1980s. It's clearly not an easy transition, and the administrators should have recognised the challenge.However, comments such as "What does Lara's dick taste like?" and "Get ready for a broken f***ing arm" and the blatant cheating were undertaken by the players, not the administrators. As the book states very clearly, nobody goes to bed honest and wakes up dishonest.I had really been hoping for insight into what motivates supremely talented players to conduct themselves this way. I am well persuaded of their administrators' incompetence, but that does not excuse the foul behaviour of the players on the field.
