This is great for a comic book lover. My 8 year old loves to draw his own comics and I thought this would take the hassle out of drawing his own boxes and he could have them all in one place instead of a million sheets of paper all over hisroom. I can't wait to give it to him. Quality paper too!

I really like the number of pages this book gives me. It is a great deal. I also like the format, with the different-sized panels. It lends the story extra action because the bigger panels can give a scene more emphasis, because of the larger size. That way, these panels can be used for the more important scenes. This is a nice little book for kids who are into drawing comics. The only thing to be mindful of is that every page is exactly the same - you don't get any layouts other than the one on the cover, which is a bit repetitive after a while.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for an (almost) 11-year-old boy who has recently become interested in drawing his own comics. He LOVED it! I would highly recommend it. I believe the price is very fair for a great product that will get a lot of use and encourage creativity. :)

Based on a great Chinese legend that contains a lesson for us all, well told.

Whatever happens, happens, for good or for ill. A man teaches his friends about the twists of fate, as he takes what comes with little complaint. What seems good for him turns bad, and vice-versa. And thus all learn a bit of zen. Acceptance.It's an interesting little story, and I wish I got to see the puppet that comes along with this! Sadly, it was a library book, so no puppet for me. But just on the book quality, I actually like this a lot. Kids deal with so many ups and downs, and this book teaches them to just go with it, for all will turn out in its own way.I don't think there's much repeat value here, for most kids, however. I'd say borrow it from your library, and if they keep requesting it, then it's time to buy. But, overall, it seems like a one-read kind of book.

This is the second book I have read from Ed Young, a Caldecott Medalist from the city I live in - Tianjin, China. In The Lost Horse, Mr. Young beautifully retells a Chinese folktale. The story is about a wise man named Sai who lives on the northern frontier of China. One day his strong and fast horse is terrified by a thunderstorm and runs away. Everyone tries to comfort Sai for his loss, but he does not believe that losing his horse is necessary a bad thing. A few days later the horse returns with another strong and fast horse. Everyone congratulates Sai on his new blessings, but he does not believe it is necessary a good thing. The next month Sai's son rides the new horse and is thrown off. His leg breaks, and everyone once again tries to comfort Sai. Once again Sai says that what has occurred is not necessary a bad thing. Later in the year, China is invaded and all able-bodied men have to fight. Many die in battle, but Sai's son did not have to go to war due to his injury. Sai's son learns from his father that life is full of twists and turns. Things may not always be as good or as bad as they may seem. Although this is a children's book, much can be gleaned from this story. Pastel and watercolor collages that are similar to traditional Chinese paintings compliment what Publishers Weekly says is among Young's best works. $7 is an absolute bargain for such a book. I highly recommend it.

Efficient text, coupled with sweeping illustrations, saturate this Chinese tale of happenstance and fortuosity. Sai is a wise man living in Northern China. Having few possessions, he takes things as they happen, for better or for worse. When his valued horse gets lost, he believes it may not be a bad thing; the horse then returns with a mare. Sai finds harmony in taking the bad with the good. Young's artwork is portrayed in subdued oils that radiate with a chalk-like appearance. Soft hues fade into another, giving an impressionistic view of the Gobi Desert. The art is often too relaxed at times; on a few pages, the texture of the canvas is plainly visible. However, tinges of life in China hundreds of years ago take form for an indelible rendering. Display this recommended book with other Chinese folk tale picture books during Chinese New Year. Although targeted for 4-6 year olds, children up to age 8 will also enjoy this book.

The pamphlet has a lot of information on both sides. It helps a beginner on wanting to participate in one of God's appointed Feast that God indicates he says to do forever. Forever means forever. I am a Christian but I do partake in the three feast that God says to do. This is wonderful for the whole family. I highly recommend celebrating Passover as did Jesus.

I had tought myself Latin to the extent where I enjoyed reading from Cicero or from various medieval Latin texts. This book is my first experience with the classical Latin poetry.I decided to go through it without rushing, rather deliberately, starting from the overview of the grammar and then going into the beautiful epic story of Aeneas travels. I start each page with a review of the vocabulary for the page, then reading and translating the verses while reviewing the usage and grammar notes on the bottom of the page. The beuty of the format is that all the necessary information, word list and grammatical usage, is included on each page right below the verses. There is no need to contantly search in a separate dictionnary for the meanings of the words; with very few exceptions, all the needed words are included on the page you are working on. This makes the reading and learning experience to be very enjoyable. Although I am still working on Book I, I can already see how much my skills have improved, how much easier the reading and translation becomes with every new page being completed.So, if you feel you want to take a plunge into Latin poetry, but you have felt somewhat intimidated, buy this book and discover the beauty of Vergil verses. The unique format will make this experience to be truly exhilarating.Perhaps one word of caution intended for those who decide to jump into Latin texts while skipping (or skimming) the Latin grammar. Do not waste your money on a book like this one or on various dictionnaries if you do not posses a solid(!) foundation of Latin grammar. If that was not the case it will be just a wasted effort and will only make you very frustrated.

I love this book! I'm a student and I ordered this for a 4th semester Latin course. A page usually has about 1/2-1/3 dedicated to the Latin text, while the rest is notes for the translation. The book does not have a side-by-side English translation, which I'm thankful for since those translations are rarely helpful. Instead, the notes are extensive and there is a fold-out sheet in the back with plenty of vocab. I only wish there was more room between the lines of the text for note-taking and scansion-marking. I can't compare this text to any other editions of the Aeneid, as this is the only one I've worked with.

I love Pharr's set-up with all of the footnotes, as well as the copious grammar notes in the back (I've learned a number of things from the appendix that good ol' Wheelock never mentioned!). Overall, as a Latin student, I really like the format.The one thing I don't like is related the binding. This is the kind of text where you would want the book to lie open on its own so that you have hands free for writing out your translating, referring to other books/dictionaries/etc., but the paperback version of this book is one of those it's too stiff to lie open on its own, so you either have to crack the spine to force it to do so, or you constantly have to put a bookmark in it, close the book, do some writing, then open the book again. Minor annoyance, yes, but still an annoyance when you have a large section to be translating in one sitting. If you're going to be doing a hefty amount of translating out of the book, then you might be wise to spend a few more bucks and get the hardcover.

Really thick and full of good info. I got this for my brother who is in college for classical studies including Latin. He loves it. Please be aware it doesn't have an english translation in the book. It's all Latin text with footnotes in English.

This is the great classic text for beginning to read Virgil in the original Latin. Pharr gives great help with vocabulary and also is very helpful with glossing grammatical things that tend to trip up people new to Latin poetry. Pharr very helpfully often will rewrite passages with particularly thorny syntax into prose word order which can be extremely helpful. Overall, Pharr's text is extremely helpful. All of the notes are on the same page, which is very nice.

This Latin textbook provides the first half of the Aeneid in Latin, along with plenty of footnotes and appendices to guide you as you translate the great epic. Each page contains five to fifteen lines of the Aeneid, and the remaining two-thirds of each page contains the vocabulary, grammar notes, and miscellaneous footnotes. You never need to turn a page or refer to another dictionary, so the tedious aspect of translating is removed. (My fellow students love this awesome aspect and therefore call it the "Pharr Out" edition.) The appendices provide all the grammar rules you may have forgotten or have yet to learn. Beginner and Intermediate Latin students can't go wrong with this book if they need or want to tackle Virgil's Aeneid.

I wish that the footnotes bellow would be less encoded, but yes it was good and good editing. Latin can just be grueling, but the diction and the story will make you want to keep grinding through it.

This is great for anyone who wants to practice translating Latin to English. All of the notes are really helpful and at the bottom of the page, which is much more convenient than most books where they are at the back of the book. It gives a great dictionary, and every word you will possibly need is in this book.

This really is an excellent book. It's easy to read and follow because it's so organized and written in a style that is easy to comprehend. I haven't read through the whole book yet because I'm only working on the multifidus and piriformis muscles of my lumbosacral area of my back. That's where my main health issue lies. The chapter on relieving backaches helps you understand how and where in the body you may have gotten the back pain and how to treat it. There are a multivariate of conditions in the body that may lead to pain in this area that are considered.For years I practiced foot reflexology on friends, family, and myself, but I got away from it, for whatever reasons. But now I'm back and plan to stay with it. There are pressure points in the feet and hands that help to relieve back pain, and sometimes even eliminate it. But I won't get into that here because the book is the true guide with illustrations and directions that shows how to work the feet and hands to locate the pain in the body and then treat it with massage and other modalities. Diet can also lead to health problems that manifest themselves in the body.Something else that is excellent about the teaching methodologies in this chapter is the exercise regiment. Actually the exercises are a combination of stretches and postures and breathing. And some you can do sitting in a chair which is so helpful if you are having trouble bending over or getting up and down off the floor. I've been doing these stretches for seven days now and I haven't had one back ache. And usually I have shooting back pain in my right lower lumbar the minute my feet hit the floor when I wake up in the morning. I mean I couldn't get through a day without wearing my copper fit belt.Along with the gentle stretches and rubbing pressure points on my hands and feet, I also use two different roller bottles of essential oils along my spine. One bottle has Deep Blue EO and the other has a combo of Marjoram and Peppermint EO. And I've been going barefoot around the house. I think that has really helped me, too. It is a form of acupressure. I know for sure that all these modalities are working together to help me. I'm positive because I feel better.This book is more or less an introduction to the field of acupressure and reflexology and I'm really glad I bought it. It's already helped me a great deal and I know when I study the whole book very thoroughly, I'll reap the benefits even further. I don't expect to be a master on the subject. Nor do I plan do enter this field as a private business. But I do expect to take the responsibility to learn how to treat my body holistically and this book offers a good starter course.

Packed with a lot of fluff and filler... there is no index for quickly finding relief for a certain ailment.... instead you have to skim from page to page to try and find what you are looking for. Because there is no index for relief, you can spend ages looking through the book and find out in the end that it isn't there.

And relevant informations are presented thoroughly to readers who are new to a topic like Acupressure.Of course a book can only contain so much information.I've found author Michael Reed Gach the best on acupressure. He has one book like this For Dummies about general acupressure. Then he divided his publications into various groups like arthritis, back pains, energy and love making.I recommend his books after you've finished reading Acupressure for Dummies.

Not only does it provide rapid pain relief, the cost factor is often a barrier to those who have limited funds, or, no free time to get an appointment. Most professionals are booked which can delay treatment for immobilizing pain. Reflexology primarily used for the feet, has the same trigger points that will rlease pain all over the body's nerve pathways, however, the technique is used likewise as Acuppresure. Having a learned skilled knowledge of either technique is almost as good as a professional in ones pocket. BB

No doubting this is a fun read. I read it in 1 sitting (I take weeks to read anything). I really loved the way Owen opened a world to the Municipalist we meet - freeing him from the constraints of a disordered world he thinks he can control. As they say, we make plans and God laughs.Yes it’s a page turner, entertaining and fun. If you leave it at that you miss what it means for our society, the widening gap between cities and countryside, polarization, how to fix it, how those fixes can go wrong - what to do if you’re caught in this machine. We see two approaches, to tighten the grip further or to become nihilists... which is the answer? Is either the cure? Is there a solution?If you want a fun read this is it. Just like a city from far off, it looks like a clean breezy skyline. Analyze the material and it’s implications and you find a multilayered, gritty, thoughtful commentary on our modern life.

Searching for Kirkland. Yep. Henry and Owen, the oddest couple of all odd couples, find themselves looking for Terrence Kirkland, the director of Metropolis, who has gone missing. Things have gone wild in Metropolis and they shortly find themselves up against...what exactly? This is one where there's an alternate reality where Owen, who is AI, is as much a detective, as Henry, a boring man who really isn't a detective at all. The early part of this is about world building (I found this interesting but realize others might not), the later part is a thriller. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. It's hard to describe, hard to review, but fun to read.

Bureaucratic policy might not seem like an exciting topic for a novel, but Seth Fried’s debut technothriller centers around just that. And, The Municipalists is a riveting read full of wisecracks, classic movie references, sassy computers, and fedoras. (Machine guns and grenades and a smattering of domestic terrorism make an appearance, too.) Light in tone but carrying a surprisingly heavy message about the relationship between institutions and progress, it has some stylistic flaws but ably entertains in spite of them.In an alternate America where cities can sprawl to 35 million residents, The Municipalists follows the escapades of a government employee at the United States Municipal Survey. With such high levels of urbanization, the USMS is a key part of bureaucratic administration. However, when a series of attacks on the agency occur, Henry Thompson, a morose, rigid automaton, is sent to the city of Metropolis to investigate. Accompanying him is a fellow-agent, with a penchant toward snark and alcoholism. The twist? That agent is OWEN, a supercomputer made alive through holographic projection. As they attempt to find the source of the disruptions, they pair tumbles from predicament to predicament, relying on the combination of OWEN’s intelligence and confidence, and Henry’s commitment to the agency and to organization, to pull them through. The plot is fast-paced, but the real highlight of the book is the relationship between Henry and OWEN. Their complimentary characteristics and mutual eccentricities take The Municipalists from a somewhat-predictable storyline to a book with heartfelt human (/nonhuman) interest.I certainly enjoyed The Municipalists; however, there were a couple of areas in which it left me a little bit wanting. In retrospect, I think I liked the concept more than I liked the way in which it was executed. The plot was fast-paced, which is good for a book with a lot of action. Still, at times the transitions between scenes of action felt disjointed, as if there was not enough of a lull between them, and sometimes left me trying to figure out how Henry and OWEN got from one point to another. In addition, there were a couple of other stylistic moves that Fried made that gave the book a truncated feel. There is a lot of very witty banter between the two protagonists, but many of OWEN’s comments are in indirect quotes. That is, instead of giving OWEN’s words directly as he said them, in quotation marks, Fried frequently has Henry summarize what OWEN said or did, which removes the reader a bit from the immediate action. Finally, the end of the book also felt like it could have used more space. No spoilers, but Henry undergoes some personality and lifestyle transitions that could have used more of a lead-up and more exploration, particularly because they relate so closely to the ultimate message the book very explicitly makes. But all of that is in the very last chapter, and so it feels like an abrupt acceleration and then braking.Overall, it almost felt like a book that had been edited down too much. I would have liked the author to dwell longer on transitions between scenes, to give fuller dialogue (particularly because the dynamic between Henry and OWEN is great), and to spend longer wrapping up the plot in order to make Henry’s character development more organic. Basically, I wanted a longer book. Still, that does mean that I very much enjoyed the book that I have, and would definitely have been willing to read more.The Municipalists is a fast-paced, smart, highly absorbing read. I found myself laughing at several points throughout. Fried avoids falling into the trap of over-stereotyping either the rational, socially awkward Henry or the quirky supercomputer OWEN, finding the right balance of human and machine, of reason and emotion, for both. The book is thought-provoking, challenging the dichotomy of right and wrong and raising issues relating to systematic disenfranchisement. The dynamic between Henry and OWEN is what makes this book shine, but there’s wit and humor amidst a very dark, and very politically relevant landscape. I will say this first. I passed all my written exams. (I applied to three different police departments). So did reading this book help? I'll say yes. But it was more of a refresher read from what I learned in High school. And that was from over 15 years ago. If you are of average to above normal intelligence. Taking a quick read through this book will definitely help reinforce everything you should have learned in grade school. So buy this book and read through the whole thing, just so you have some peace of mind that you actually made an effort towards a very rewarding and life changing career. Good luck!Side note. I also purchased the Norman Hall's police exam preparation book. Buy both. Don't be stingy. Invest in yourself.

Of all the police exams this pretty much encompasses what most of them will test you on, that being said you really don't need a booklet to study but if you want to over prepare like I do this is one of the best out there!

I am currently taking several courses in Buddhism, and one is taught by the author of this book. I just started that course and her teaching style seems down to earth and enjoyable, but I was slightly annoyed when I saw this book would be required reading for the class. The reason was simply that I've read many books on how to meditate before, and I am taking these classes to advance my knowledge of Tibetan Buddhist practices specifically and felt like this was a slight step backward in my knowledge. I based my entire assumption on the title "How To Meditate". But I dutifully ordered a used copy of it and prepared myself for yet another introduction to meditation book. Turns out the book is fantastic, but I have to say I dislike the title a lot. It doesn't do the book justice and it's such a generic title that I thought I had it all figured out before I even got it. I would have absolutely passed by this book if I hadn't been required to purchase it for the class.Yes, the book does offer instructions on how to meditate. And she does so in a very down to earth, accessible way. Plain language, and a very direct "how-to" that is missing from many other meditation intro books. How to sit, what to do with your eyes, hands, etc., what strange thoughts or distractions may occur and how to address these problems when they happen, and more. But there is SO much more to the book that I never would have discovered based on the title or even the description, and it's that other content that makes me especially happy. The first two chapters cover the how-to basics for the most part. The rest of the book is mostly specific Tibetan Meditations; meditations on the mind, analytical meditations, and visual meditations. Then another entire section on specific Tibetan prayers and other devotional practices. This was exactly what I wanted to learn in the course but did not expect from this book based on the title.I feel it's somewhat important to stress that these are meditations and prayers that are mostly from the Tibetan tradition. That's not to say that anyone can't enjoy them, you certainly can, and the instruction is presented in a way that anyone can benefit from, but some of the references might be very new or even strange if you aren't already practicing the Tibetan tradition or even in Buddhism at all. For example, she includes meditations on Tonglen, meditation on Avalokiteshvara, Vajrasattva purification, etc. It's the very thing I love about the book since I've been trying to learn and compile these exact practices from various sources, but I'm not sure it would be the best choice for someone who just wants a secular introduction to basic meditation. That's why I dislike the title so much; people like me wanting specific Tibetan practices will easily miss it, and those just wanting a basic intro to general meditation might end up with a bunch of Tibetan stuff they didn't really need. It's kind of like buying a book called "How to Cook" but finding out it's mostly about how to cook Thai food.Back to the instruction aspect: she adds to the basic instruction in the first two chapters by offering more specific instructions at the beginning of the various practices, and then gradually incorporates what you have learned from previous chapters as you progress through the book. So you learn specific meditations, practices and prayers AND get instruction on how to do them. It's easy to google the names of any of these Tibetan practices and get lots of results, but not many that include HOW to do the practice in addition to the recitations and visuals. And she simplifies it nicely so it's suitable for beginners to these practices. Chapters are short and easy to digest. This book is going to be a huge help in aiding me to establish a more disciplined set of practices, there are some for daily use (refuge prayer, dedication of merit, etc), others for special situations like times of illness (Medicine Buddha), etc.So I love the book and am very happy to have an easy to understand guide that teaches these practices and am looking forward to learning the ones I don't know and incorporating them into my routine. I still think it should be named something more accurate like "How To Do Tibetan Practices" or "A Collection of Tibetan Buddhist Meditations and Prayers Including Instructions" or something along those lines. But if you don't mind that they are Tibetan Buddhist oriented, or if you are looking for a Tibetan Buddhist specific book that covers basic meditations and prayers, this will be a wonderful resource. I'm very glad I was required to purchase this, it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

Two years ago, I developed a very serious interest in techniques for prayer and meditation. There were no sources of support in my particular locale, so I went on a search through Amazon to find the best practical guide to meditation. At that time, I had no special interest in the belief systems supporting particular approaches to either prayer or meditation. It made no difference whether the approach was Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, or secular. I just wanted a down to earth, nuts and bolts kind of book that gave me guidance on the actual practice of something like meditation.This was, and is today, the best book that I could find. It eventually served as an entry point into Mahayana Buddhism and, more broadly, into the tradition of contemplative mysticism within both Buddhism and Chistianity. Ms. McDonald typically begins each of her chapters on a particular kind of meditation with an explanation of the underlying reasons for it, followed by a careful walk-through of the beginning, middle, and ending. Although she introduces Buddhist concepts, she also keeps her framework open-ended and suggests where meditators might depart from a strict Buddhist style when the concepts (like reincarnation) seem too forbidding.After introductory material, the book broadly address samatha (mindfulness, focussing), vipassana (insight meditation), and vajrayana (the use of imagery in meditation). She makes things very easy to understand, and buying into her approach really doesn't require that one become a Buddhist. The only thing she did not address was planning out a sequence of meditations in some kind of logical fashion. But this is a minor point.The book is not a "read" as such. It's more of a handbook to be consulted in the course of establishing meditative practices. I find that I have never really stopped reading the book. I just keep re-reading passages for clarification, and embarking on new passages when I feel I am ready.The usual advice for someone meditating is to work with a teacher or guru. That isn't always possible, though, and in those cases this book is the next best thing. Those who buy this book might also visit the website for the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayanan Tradition. It used to be the case that you could obtain free of charge audiobooks of Ms. McDonald conducting classes on meditation.Ms. McDonald is a magnificent teacher. I'm pleased to be her student even though we have never met, and I hope that my own feeble efforts at meditation eventually honor her.

Reading this book has been a real inspiration. I have a better knowledge of how to properly meditate and i like how it teachings me different ways to meditate.
