Grade 1-3-A creative way to instill an appreciation of art in children. The text begins with a "hand-printed" letter on lined paper from the teacher, Ms. Brandt, posing three questions to her students for their reports about a famous artist. The rest of the book is related as Keesia Johnson's report. Hartland's color illustrations are captioned with dialogue or other text; examples of Matisse's art are dispersed throughout; and there are photos of the artist and his mother; of the child who "wrote" the report and her sister; of Matisse in his 70s, making paper cutouts; and of stained-glass windows in a church that he designed. A brief biographical sketch is included, and children are also told about Matisse's changes in style, use of bright colors, and skill in various mediums. The last page contains the teacher's "hand-printed" note to Keesia after reading her work. This book could be used in conjunction with Mike Venezia's Henri Matisse (Children's, 1997), Nelly Munthe's Meet Matisse (Little, Brown, 1983; o.p.), and Ernest Lloyd Raboff's Henri Matisse (Lippincott, 1988; o.p.) to introduce the life and works of this renowned French artist.Augusta R. I bought this book for a presentation I did for my daughter's first grade class on Matisse. I didn't find it all that helpful for the presentation but it's a nice book if you want a child to have something to look at read at home. I ended up downloading the pictures I wanted from the web and using them on the projector. I drew a connection between Matisse and Eric Carle who was profoundly influenced by Matisse. It seemed more accessible to the kids because they all know Eric Carle and I hoped that maybe Matisse might stick in their brains better that way.
I used this book for a ReadAloud session with 3rd graders. They really enjoyed the book. It's well written, creative, colorful and geared toward elementary learners. The book kept the kids attention throughout our reading session and taught them basics about Henri Matisse' life, the order of his artistic styles.
Bought for my 4 year old. Its a little too advance for her, but I'm loving this book. It will definitely come into rotation again when we cover Matisse at home.
Very long book but tons of great info!
has dad some art classes where they look at artists work and then emulate one of their own paintings.some unique ideas. good for rainy day.lets you know more about artist from child to old age.Full of information and styles of paintings
Love the content of this book but buyers should know that this and other books in this series are small and somewhat flimsy paperbacks for the price. Also best for 3rd grade and under. I will hang onto it but consider giving it to a coworker with younger students (I have 4th, 5th, and 6th).
This book contains lots of biographical information about Matisse, but on a kid's level. It is filled with photos of Matisse and his work, along with cute illustrations. Great for elementary age kids.
Great book about Henri Matisse. Perfect for my elementary art classroom. Students can read to themselves when they finish early and can learn much from reading this book.
