I am a longtime follower of this marvelous artist. The release of this photographic chronicle of her life coincides with the release of her what well may very well be the greatest album in her career: "Give My Love to London". Personally, I find all of her albums to be works of art. The subtitle of the book is "A Life on Record" which I did expect would be a very detailed account of her recording career but if one is looking for a discography, go to her official website. It is not to be found in this book.The photos are wonderful but the chronology is off a bit such as photos of her on David Bowie's '1980 Floor Show' in 1973 after the release of "Broken English" in 1979. Faithfull, herself, admitted that she was not very interested in this book until it was time to add captions which are in her own handwriting. There are numerous photos without captions at all.Nevertheless, it is a beautiful book and artistically put together. Marianne Faithfull has always been a fascinating artist and woman. I have had the distinct honor to have her seen her in concert twice and to have met her when she was touring to promote her autobiography, "Faithfull". She was incredibly friendly and forthcoming. Faithfull deserves the accolades for her work as a musical artist and she has every right to set the boundaries on her personal life. One must remember that she has been fodder for the scandal sheets. No longer is she known as Mick Jagger's Chick nor does she need to discuss her former drug addictions. She has evolved into an artist with high standards for every album she releases.This book is insightful into her journey through a fascinating life and career. I won't toss away my cuttings by any means but this is a book for all Faithfull followers. I do recommend it highly and Marianne Faithfull has earned it.

It's a book that will appeal to her fans maybe some rolling stone collectors as there's more than a few pictures of Mick Jagger. Almost all of the pictures are tasteful, so if you were hoping for nudes you won't get it here although there were a few racy pictures but nothing by way of porn. The pictures are of personal variety which is stated, performance, movie stills and set shots, fashion type shots and there's a lot of captions and text written by Marrianne. It's definitely complete and your not seeing her horrific side. Marrianne is a true survivor and not the person who you perceived but then isn't everything an illusion in the end. It's a fine book and let's you in from the outside to the inside to see how a celebrity lived from the UK. I can't recall too many picture books that actually uses personal pictures and pictures of their homes so for that it's a little bit more personal as a book and you get her captions.

Great collection of photos of an icon, ranging from photos by well-known professionals to lots of Marianne's personal photos and those of her friends. It would have been nice if the pics were in chronological order, but they aren't. Still, there are plenty of rare and wonderful images all the way from her childhood to recent years; the majority of the photos are in color.. She wrote a line or two on a number of the photos to explain them, and her handwriting really takes some getting used to, but it's worth the effort to decipher her notes identifying other people, events, locations, etc. Otherwise, there's a short intro by Salman Rushdie in which he reveals (as she did in her 2nd autobiography) that one of her ancestors was an aristocrat, Leopold von Sacher Masoch whose last name is the origin of the word "masochist." I love this woman. If you lover her as well, you'll definitely want to own a copy of this book.

I guess I didn't do enough research on this book, but it's mostly pictures. I thought this was another autobiography. Oh well. It's still very nice - quite large, and the photos are interesting.

This book is even nicer and more fun than I expected. Tons of photos, very good quality. YAY!

I received this book today only to find out that the lettering in some pages washed off like if the printer ran out of ink. The entire book seems like if it was printed at a regular printing machine, i disregarded that detail, just to find out later that page 586 fell out of the book like if it was never attached to it, or glued to it, and i just opened this book for the first time because i received it today! I'm going to return this printed copy of the book and get the hardcover version.

WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.

This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication.If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. If you work in the nursery or landscape industry and seriously love plants, this can be one of your best friends.

While I usually classify Dr. Dirr's books as additions to the basic gardening library, I have to include this one in the basic book section--one you should have. Most all of us have woody landscape plants and among us the knowledge of how to care for them is mixed. Having been associated with the Master Gardener Volunteer program in three states, I find this book to contain the answers to many relevant questions that presented to the call in volunteers.

excellent reference book. Just keep in mind that Dr. Dirr is coming from a Georgia climate perspective so keep that in mind. The book has all the most common woody landscaping plants.

The book is fantastic...it is extensive, very detailed and precise, the drawings are accurate and lovely. All in all, I'm very pleased with the book and am certain it will be very useful among my reference books.The bad things was that about the last fourth of the pages had a severe crease in them that made it hard to use for a long time. I put it under a large stack of books and used it from that weighted stack with much effort. It has straightened out a great deal, but is still not perfect. I needed it immediately or I would have refused to accept it, and returned it.

This was a "recommended" book for a horticulture class. I'm so glad I bought it. The information is presented in a friendly style, like you're sitting down for a cup of coffee with the author and he's telling you about the interesting plants he has seen and grown. Details of various cultivars make this a valuable reference that I'm sure I'll use frequently.

At first glance this book does not look like much next to the stack of glossy, color gardening books. Spend a half-hour with it and it's value becomes apparent. No photos but that doesn't hurt this book's usefulness at all. The drawings in this book are extremely helpful. I have an "Elm thing" that a relative was positive was an American Elm. I had my doubts since I think it was planted by bird droppings. I opened up the manual and looked at those line drawings and saw the new buds on Siberian Elm are spherical and the ones on American are pointed. The buds on my tree are round. A positive ID.Information on how plants do in California is rather sketchy but there are tidbits in this book you won't find anywhere else.This is no dry treatise: When Dirr gets on the subject of a plant he hates, it makes entertaining reading. Some of his commentary is thought provoking as well.I bought the hardcover. Someone mentioned the thin pages. At 1200 or so pages they need to be to save your back. The cover looks like it can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the binding is sewn, not glued. With reasonable care this book will last a long time.Should be on every gardener's shelf.

I really love reading Flora Ferrari's older man/younger woman romances. The characters in this book Sergey and Anya were interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written, with a happily ever after. I especially like the extended epilogues - where you get to see what happened to the characters in 5 and 10 years. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.

The guy is very obsessions of his woman and family. Good story to read but lack excitement to the remance.

It starts in a local Russian Pub or bar in Russia where Sergey is having a drink. Across the room is Anya looking at a drink list. Something to know about Sergey is one he is beyond wealthy and has a keen sense of smell well it's more than keen it's his money maker. He smells Anya from across the room a unique scent.Four men in the bar make off handed comments about Anya being a tourist and what they would like to do to her. Sergey goes on the attack. Whew it was intense. Now Anya flees. Sergey kinda panics.Next day: Anya is late for her first Chemistry class she is taking so she sits all the way in the back, and low and behold the man with his back to the class SNIFFS the air. Yup its Sergey. No he isn't her Professor. But a stampede is cause when the bell rings for the end of class. Yup she runs again. But this time she left a token behind. Kinda like Cinderella and the glass slipper.This gives Sergey his first clue on how to find her.This is a double virgin romance.There are romantic meals, an assisination attempts, a mixture of chemicals here and there, some hot and heavy love scenes alot of corny dialogue, a helicopter ride, a plane ride and a family built and brought together. This book kinda makes fun of other books written by this same author about names starting with the same letter for each child, which they did not do.Alot of traveling and dreams brought to fruition.No cheating and two totally obsessive people for each other and the family they created.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The new DK format has lost quality and readability. It now looks like a magazine layout, large meaningless photos, e.g. people sprawled on steps, people sprawled in a park that could be anywhere. The attempt to be arty or “contemporary” is at the expense of being coherent and useful And tne new almost unreadable type (tiny, grey-toned) makes it excruciating to read, even with reading glasses. I’ve given up on the book.

DK guides were always beautiful to hold and look through because of the glossy paper used; not so with this London 2019 Guide as they have moved to plain paper which takes away from the quality. Doesn’t come alive in the hand anymore, and unattractive to the eye.

I don't disagree with the criticisms so far (non-glossy paper; too many photos with no real "travel content"), but there's too much information for me to give it a 1 star.I have many DK books on various subjects and am a fan. This is the first time I've had one of their travel books and it falls short--short of other DK books and short of other travel guides. Being a travel guide, I couldn't expect it to be on the level with other DK books on a topic. This is only pocket-sized, with color photos reproduced on regular, non-glossy paper to keep the cost down. So, no, it doesn't have the gorgeous, informative appearance of "typical" DK books. I'm actually more disappointed, though, how it falls short of other travel books.It's not -that- bad in some ways. The maps, the breakdown of London by neighborhood and by things to see and do... the many photos--these create a feeling of adventure and excitement about London and a dsire to go and to explore. The bad part? That some sections seem kind of obvious. Reasons to go: "Sports"; "Theater"; "Parks", etc. These are all pretty vague and most are things that (in their lack of specificity) are shared with many modern cities. I like the bits on history. I like the breakdown on areas and what to do/see there. But there is scant restaurant/food information, even in the section for "foodies". None of those long lists of "Places to Eat" that most travel books haee, extensively, by area. None of that here.Same for places to stay. That is one of the big reasons I've deducted stars for it. Fodor's, Frommer's, they give places to stay, ranked and rated. It is very helpful. That's not the case here.And, finally, the typeface is so small. I'm going to stop giving anything higher than 3 stars to books without bigger font, especially as the layout has a lot of space for it. It's not tiny for space reasons but for style. And the style of little tiny font is a bad idea, particularly as most travelers skew older. This might be an interesting supplement to read along with Frommers or Fodors, but it would never be the only book you'dwant to bring, imo.

I was a travel agent for 23 years - in my late, lamented youth - and prepared many European trips for clients. I wish then that I had had a book like "DK Eyewitness London" to work with. These books, which come out yearly, are the best, most complete siteseeing guides produced today. They are mostly siteseeing because while they give a few suggestions for restaurants and hotels, the books' publishers realise that those things are covered by websites devoted to up-to-date info on dining and accommodations."DK Eyewitness London, 2019" is the latest in the London guide series. I think this year's book is a bit lighter than in previous editions. The front and back covers are thinner than before, and that makes a difference in carrying the book with you OR committing burn/slash on the book, cutting out the needed pages. That's what I was doing with the books when I travel.Now, as for the book itself. I go to London every two years so I'm fairly familiar with the city and it's sites. The DK Eyewitness books cover the sites in great detail. They highlight small, out of the way museums and historic sites. The book is so detailed that a high school or college history professor could use the book in teaching the history of London. By the way, the book is also available in Kindle.

I like the DK Eyewitness travel series, but I never take them with me on my trips, because they are too heavy. I use them for planning before my trip. Now the series has been updated and redesigned -- the paper is lighter weight and now I would consider taking these books along, although they are still a little heavier than the guidebooks that publish on newsprint-like lightweight paper. As for the content, that's unchanged. As it happens, I used the 2018 guide for a London trip last August and can compare that guide with this new one. I like it as much as I did before, there are still plenty of good ideas for places to visit, practical information such as transportation and current ticket prices, and lots of attractive photos (how did they manage to get all those pictures of cloudless bright days in London?) I especially liked that they mentioned more bookshops than most of the guides do, such as my current favorite, The London Review Bookshop in Bloomsbury. Plenty of neighborhood maps in color. Also a pull out map of central London with a Tube map on it, as well as a Tube Map on the inside cover of the books, so you have one either way. And now there's a digital edition of the whole guide , so you can bring it along without worrying about how heavy it is. Brilliant.

While is it time consuming to just "read" it (which I am doing while marking it up), it contains a lot of "meat" and the sentences are very well done.PROS:1) The sentences are mostly meaningful, short and concise (which I love), and you will see MANY other interesting words within the sentences. In this example, you will see "rollercoaster" and see that this example word (Komm) is an imperative (command).116- Komm – Come (Imperative)Lass uns mit der Achterbahn fahren. Komm schon!Let’s ride on the rollercoaster. Come on!2) Unlike many other foreign language word books, in this book you will see past participles like this one:747- Gesprochen – SpokenIch habe mit deinem Vater gesprochen. I have spoken to your father.3) Nouns are shown with their genderCONS:1) It is difficult to know which words are inside this book (and which are not) since they are NOT in alphabetic order. So, if you know some German verb you want an example of begins with "V," you have to look at 2000 words to find the one you want, and it may not even be in this book. It would be better to have a list - with clickable links - to EASILY take you to each of the 2000 words in the book. I suggest lists (in German and English) with letters A B C ... X Y Z of words in the book so that you can, for example, just click on "V" to see all the German words beginning with V (ver, verlassen, viel, etc.)There could even be some more lists (all words in alphabetic order, in both German and English and/or by category such as verbs and nouns).2) The plurals of nouns are not shown and it would be nice to see that.OVERALL: Great reference book for those, like me, learning German!

German learners need this book to go along with the other books that they are using to learn the German language.Other books may have a list of words most used but do not show them used in context.! The lay out is great. If you want to expand your vocabulary and learn how to use the words correctly , this book will help you. I wish it had 5000 words in it. Write out all of the examples and study them. Read the English translation first to see if you can write the German translation on your own.

This is great in that you have the most common words and their definitions but they are also used in a sentence with the english translation as well. Not the only thing you'll need but a useful tool in your arsenal.

Amazing list of the most used and need-to-know words in German. Not exactly light reading but a good reference to carry around, particularly on Kindle.

German is far more precise than English or other languages I've studied. I have found this very helpful and informative.

Pretty good book to help remember some of the more important words

I really like this to learn knew words every day. It's helps me to see what words I already know and how much of the example sentences I can read already without help. I would recommend this.
