This book is so interesting, and beautifully written. I couldn't put it down. It is broader in its scope than just the famous 1978 accident in which a United Airlines plane had to crash-land in a residential neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Whipple's story is about the wide-ranging effects of the crash -- in legal precedent, airline safety and maintenance procedures, and revolutionary safety protocols that are now standard practice in other areas like medicine. I have learned a lot -- about the airline industry, airplanes (especially the DC-8), what goes on in the cockpit, how lawsuits play out (and how effectively corporations evade and fight them) The book is clear, concise, and detailed but not burdened with abstruse technological discussions. Its style is gripping and dramatic, but not gratuitously so -- it is lucid, honest, compassionate, and very readable.

Hats off to Julie Whipple for an expertly-researched and compellingly-written account of this landmark event in the evolution of commercial aviation safety. That said, the potential buyer should know that the lion's share of this book is taken up by the minutia of the subsequent lawsuit filed on behalf of a young survivor, plus the protracted trial and appeals that followed. You'll need an appetite for the intricacies of tort law, aircraft maintenance, airworthiness directives, trial procedures, depositions, jury selection/instructions, and the like to fully appreciate the author's efforts.What you'll find less of is a exhaustive retelling of the events of the night of December 28, 1978 and its immediate aftermath. It's definitely there and rendered in a gripping fashion but it's a relatively small fraction of the book compared to the epic legal gyrations that followed. The account of the accident itself as well as the emotional events of the 20th anniversary of the tragedy were the best parts of the book for me but they seemed like a pretty small percentage of the whole tale.On a side note, the Kindle edition needs work: There are distracting text-formatting problems throughout and, worst of all, individual chapters are not accessible via the Kindle menus, which means there's no easy way to jump forward and back. Bwomp.

The 40th anniversary of the crash of United Flight 173 is highlighted by journalist Julie Whipple's account in "Crash Course." The story behind the story has, we read, laid dormant for all this time. Because Whipple's father was the attorney for the survivors in the huge suit with United, Whipple had "insider" access to information we otherwise would never know. That's the story. The writing is outstanding and the book is a beautiful production. Without giving anything away, I'll just say that it's a hair-raising tale sped along by the presence of clear victims and villains, who, together, wage one hell of a fight. Portlanders in particular will find the book to be a valuable addition to their own history--much of it a big surprise.

Meticulously researched, a fascinating bit of Portland, Oregon history. I had heard only a little about it before, this puts it right in perspective. Great read.

On a frigid night four days after Christmas 1978, United Airlines Flight 173 descended like a 350,000-pound ghost into a Portland, Oregon suburban neighborhood. It was miles short of the airport, out of fuel and out of options, with 181 passengers and eight crew members aboard. How this could have happened is the subject of a gripping and informative book, "Crash Course," by journalist Julie Whipple. How did a highly experienced airline captain, assisted not only by a qualified co-pilot but also a flight engineer, manage to crash a perfectly flyable passenger plane with perfectly good engines in perfectly good weather within sight of an airport? On the surface, the explanation seems simple: the captain got so preoccupied with a possible landing-gear problem that he forgot a no-doubt problem - that his four-engine DC-8 was running out of fuel and headed in the wrong direction. If that's all there were to the book, it might be interesting but not necessarily compelling or important. Fortunately, Julie Whipple has done more than relate a bizarre disaster story. "Crash Course" is a thoroughgoing brief on the accident's complex causes, which remain relevant today. Using the extensive exhibits and transcripts of an unusual court trial, she argues that the Flight 173 crash actually happened long before the plane ever left the ground. United's maintenance and management practices and how air crews of all airlines were trained, or not trained, before the 173 fiasco, get a lucid examination. Last word: Many writers wouldn't have had enough faith in their readers to risk so much use of technical detail to carry a story. But Whipple is a serious and gifted journalist and chose not to underestimate her audience. She was right, and we're all better for it.- James Long

I'm not sure what other glowing remarks I can add to those who have already given this book five stars. (Is there a way to give it more stars?) All I can add is that the book is jaw-dropping brilliant, and . . . it needs to be read! Sure, Julie Whipple has lots of awards for her journalism; sure, this might be her first "book," but dang! Heads up, everybody! Keep an eye out for that name, "Julie Whipple" on future book lists!

Grab a copy of this well-written book which takes the reader back to the event and the subsequent litigation. As an attorney who worked as a litigator, I found Whipple's detailed account of the endless litigation to be spot-on! Hurry and grab a copy of this riveting book.

This memoir has a lot of emotions attached to it, from heartache, love, joy hilarity, passions, you name it, and is related to us in a very sincere if not sometimes bizarre way. Jay I want to thank you for making me laugh out loud through most of this book..After heartache, the author leaves his home in the USA and decides to travel to clear his mind and in doing so, we get wonderful stories of the places he visits, the people he meets, his views on the different cultures and a view of his world through his love of photography. The photography is something that I could relate to, as that is a passion of mine as well.The title refers to the authors attempts, to learn Italian and it become a kick off point to many memories both old and new, which is the way he tells us about his life, but always coming back to finish his thoughts off with a bit of his class and fellow students.I found this to be very cleverly done. So if you want to read something that will make you laugh or at times cry, or amazed, this is the book you should read.

Quickly, I was cut loose from plot and expectations. Adrift, I became Jay as he unwound and rewound, flopping me like a rag doll, capturing me in a snapshot wailing loss and tripping on cobblestones and misery. He had me yearning for love, pizza and connection, then pleading for space in distant lands. Yes, endings are indeed beginnings. Thanks for the ride on the wings of your tongue.

Jay Desind has written an amazing chronicle of his life's experiences. He is witty, engaging and interspective. We are swept into his daily life, but also gain an understanding of his past as he interweaves his experience in the present with the past. We can laugh and cry as we turn the page, but always enjoy his keen vision of how a family truely loves and lives with one another. Definitely a must read. As we are lost in his language, he give words to our thoughts and feelings.

All I can say is wow for Jay's new book! I have known Jay all my life, and it has been amazing to watch him throw himself into something he loves so deeply, & create such wonderful things. When reading this book, you can feel all of his emotions, all of the things he has been through, all of the positive and negative experiences, & see how they have shaped his writing into something that makes you emotional as well. The emotional depth of this book is astounding. Jay makes you feel like you are right there with him through everything he is talking about. Jay has such a variety of expository writing, descriptive writing, narrative writing, and in a way he persuades you to keep reading by being to emotionally engaged (something that a lot of writer have a trouble with). This is Jay's best book, wait, who am I kidding, all of them are the best.!"All you need to know about a book is if the last page stings your soul, if it does, your in for a great adventure. "

I feel I have made a new friend.Jay shows there's nothing so American as an American in a different country. The structure of the memoir is based on the days of an Italian language class in Padua, but it is more an expanding spiral where you get glimpses of a story that you don't see until you look back from the end. It reminded me of Tristram Shandy, but with much more of a point.Lots of good humor, and very touching to this middle-aged lady, this is a book for people with a few years on them. Just got out of college? Mmmm, you're probably not ready yet. Get it and take it out in ten years, when you're no longer feeling like a kid. No you don't need to have dreamed about going to a different country, just accumulate the dings all of us get as we get experience, esp. outside the well-ordered paths.

This memoir really surprised me. At first and throughout, Jay's singular voice is at times laugh-out loud witty, wry, amusing and highly intelligent. Then at the end he sucker punches you with an honest and heartfelt account of losing his parents and partner. This book is a spiral, going backwards and forwards through time. He is skillful enough to have never made me feel lost. Several times in the book he asks you to take his hand, and you actually feel that you are on a journey with a friend, a friend that wants you to see the funny things of life but also wants to give you reassurances when you travel to darker times.This book is about many things. Learning a language. Experiencing new relationships. Travel. Family connections. Art. History. In a way it's like ending up on a planet called Jay and discovering a whole new landscape where it's possible to sometimes fly with Dolly Parton or have lunch with Julia Roberts in Italy. I know, sounds a little daffy, but somehow Jay draws you in and you aren't surprised to be at one point observing a young couple coming across his book at a used book store and using it as foreplay, and then later being at the edge of his bed filled with the grief and uncertainty of a relationship and circumstances that are pushing him to fall into a pit.To the very end of this book, Jay makes clever use of different forms of writing—quoting poetry, living in Edward Thomas's Adlestrop poem, using his own photos as flashbacks to stories about his past, and one chapter which is one very long sentence long that reads like a photographic diary of a day. Somehow he pulls all this off. Even the very last paragraph of the book leads you right back to the beginning. All of this is done with real feeling. I feel like I know Jay.This book is something I recommend.

This is a favorite of mine from grade school, where I checked it out at least once a year. A well-crafted and inspiring story with solid and engaging detail about the early days of mountaineering. I still enjoy it as an adult.

Banner in the Sky rates among the top adventure books ever written and is in a style that is tightly composed, gets promptly to the point, and provides realistic and exciting descriptions. This marvelous book rates with the likes of the writings of Hemingway, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald, S. Crane, etc. in its presentation and impact.As a newspaper editor who examines millions of words of text each year, I give Banner in the Sky a solid five stars as the best I have read thus-far this year. It is funny how I, at age 58, had never heard of the book except through accidentally watching Third Man On The Mountain (Disney)on TV recently. The movie was astounding, among Disney's greatest work. I have always been a big Disney fan, too, and even wear a Mickey Mouse watch and wedding ring and did not know that movie existed.Long story short, both are superb. The love interest in the movie is not in the book, which does not detract from it at all. In fact, both the book and the movie are must-see, must-read items for me. I will be re-reading the book and I have already in the past two months seen the movie 18 times.

I read this book in 4th grade for school and LOVED it. Later I gave it to my little brother when he was in 6th grade and we had a lot of trouble finding books that would hold his attention enough for them to be worth the effort for him to read them. This was one of the first "breakthrough" books that helped him really start to read fluently.

The Disney movie, Third Man on the Mountain, was based on this book, so I had to read it. Excellent read. While the movie had extra plot line, characters--the book goes into the thoughts and feelings of this young man who is going to climb the mountain that his father died on. The memorable moments for me were when he took shelter in the cave his father died in while heroically trying to keep his friend from freezing. And the prayer of course that drove away the terrors of the mountain. The local climbers believed that demons ruled that mountain.

A great read------and Walt Disney then made a terrific movie !

Wonderful mountain climbing story with a heart thumping moral dilemma. Great book for middle elementary and up...not to be missed!

I use this book in my classroom of 5th graders. We read it before watching the Disney movie, Third Man on the Mountain. Excellent, easy read.

Mellberg makes a colossal blunder and the fallout is devastating.Through flashbacks, we learn of an 1870 - 1871 incident on Ghost Island.The ending is brilliant. I never saw it coming, although I did suspect something fishy about Nathalie's son.Not as good as some of her previous books, although it was close. I will continue to read Camilla Lackberg's books as they become available.

The ghosts are friendly, almost affectionate, and would love to advise the suffering humans who live there embroiled in dangerous relationships. But their warnings are rarely heeded in time.While all this ghostly activities are going on, the police in Fjallbacka are faced with a perplexing murder case. A nice young man of sterling character has been shot dead in his apartment. As usual, Patrik Hedstrom is leading the investigation, and his wife Erica is doing some snooping on her own. The lazy obnoxious police chief Mellberg is making stupider mistakes than ever. And false clues are further confusing the picture.Patrik and Erica now have twin infant sons, as well as their little daughter. And Erica has new worries about her emotionally fragile sister Anna, who just lost a baby. So in addition to murders and tragedies past and present, we have plenty of family dramas.Life in small town Fallbacka gets very lively in this book, or should I say deadly? She has written ten novels to date in the Fjällbacka series. As best I can tell, all have been translated into English. The most recent, The Witch (2017), isn't available in the United States at this writing. Of the other nine, six have appeared in Kindle editions. I've now read and reviewed all six.

Another in the series featuring Patrik Hedstrom and his wife, Erica Falck. It is a ghost story featuring an island off the coast of Fjallbacka (Sweden) where it is said “the dead never leave the island”. The story involves the financier of one of the town's largest projects, Mats Sverin, who is found murdered. It appears that he had no enemies and his background was largely unknown. His school-day girlfriend, Nathalie has fled from her abusive husband to the island owned by her family with her 5 year old son. Chapters alternate from present day happenings to the story set in 1870 where a young woman is taken to the lighthouse married to the lighthouse keeper but alone apart from the assistant lighhouse keeper. These episodes are particularly dark and there is constant reference in both time zones to the dead people who talk to the inhabitants of the island. The macabre atmosphere is, as always, lightened by the domestic narrative of Patrick, Erica and their growing family (they now have a daughter and twin boys). A really good read. Comfortable to return to familiar characters. I really enjoy these books.

Claudia Friedlander is a voice teacher and fitness expert based in New York City. She has presented workshops on vocal fitness for The Voice Foundation and the Performing Arts Medicine Association, and was an invited panel discussant on health and wellness for OPERA America. Her students have performed on Broadway, and at leading opera houses including The Santa Fe Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. She is the author of the monthly column “Musings on Mechanics” for Classical Singer Magazine as well as a widely read and cited blog on vocal technique and fitness, The Liberated Voice. In 2008, she joined the faculty of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, where her most recent project was the development, in collaboration with Joyce DiDonato, of The Singer’s Audition Handbook, an interactive online career development guide for young singers.

Wonderful responsible integrated approach to the physical, mental, and yes, even some not to the spiritual work and art of singing! Claudia Friedlander explains the anatomical mechanics of singing cleanly in the context of the whole person. I also really appreciate her understanding and application of working on body balance as it applies to singing and the work of being a artist and artisan of live performance. Have recommended already to friends and colleagues who sing and teach singers and actors.

I love the diagrams, first of all! Somehow the anatomy lessons in this book are easier for me to receive than in a traditional biology book, maybe because it directly applies them to singing? Anyway, I've just started teaching voice and this book is invaluable! The work-out options are also dope, but I'm only just scratching the surface of them.

This book is a great resource for singers of all styles. I’m a pop singer, and the chapter on laryngeal anatomy is really helping me to even out my vocal registers and expand my range upwards!

I bought this book because I have found Dr Friedlander's Toutube channel so useful. Indeed, the anatomy illustrations are very clear and her explanation of how the vocal apparatus works is extremely comprehensive, although not entirely comprehensible at the first reading. This will be a reference work for me and I expect to return to it often. It is too early to say whether the exercises are helpful but they are a valuable part of the book. I am more sceptical about the dietary advice which is based on the standard dietary recommendations.

Even with YouTube and the internet, a Haynes manual is a great reference, especially when it is a less common vehicle. Bought for my son to use with his bike.

This manual service manual is sufficient for performing most repairs and is a very good reference. The photos and diagrams are satisfactory (but not great). For the price, I do recommend it.

Using this manual I've been able to diagnois electrical problems, bleed my clutch to fix a soft clutch handle, change my oil, as well as perform general cleaning and answer any questions I've had on my 1984 Honda Sabre VF700S. Good illustrations and answers for the differing bike models have let me help my neighbor out with his Magna 1100.

This is just like every other Haynes manual. Most of the information is there and can get you through most repairs. I prefer the factory service manual. This one was more in the budget and was great for starting to service my first motorcycle.
