This is a novel we selected for our Book Club, and my first reaction was that this is an odd book. But it turned out to be a gift. The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen 83 ¼ Year Old is written as an actual diary of a pensioner in an assisted living home in Amsterdam, a novel translated from Dutch to English. The reality of the setting was spot on, no mincing words here. The characters were true to life with a lot of whining about old-age maladies, and the main characters in the Old but Not Yet Dead club were delightful and genuine. I, myself, am close enough to this age to relate and sympathize, but the surprise for me was the perseverance of this group of friends. And, there, is the gist of this tale. Friendship. A true, deep love for each, a love that was often held inside but loyal to the end. Of course, in this setting you can expect a lot of ends. But there was also great dark wit, well-placed cynicism, out-loud laughter, and such tender moments. I was uplifted by the spirit of this novel. The author is unrevealed, and there is a sequel, On the Bright Side, recently published. Though I must admit I am quite jealous that the Dutch apparently now have a TV series based on Mr. Groen's escapades.

Mr. Hendrik Groen, resident of an old age home in Amsterdam, decides to keep a journal over the course of 2013. He intends to write a scathing and honest look at life in the home, but it turns into a charming meditation on life, love, and aging. It is interesting to see the character move from snarky and unhappy to trying to make the most of his life.Mr. Groen begins by commenting on the other residents of the facility and their irritating habits. His best friend is a heavy drinker with no filter and a love of mischief. Mr. Groen’s life begins to change when an intelligent and pleasant woman moves in. Together they decide to learn more about the rules and regulations of the home, suspecting that the rules are made for the convenience of administration. Along with his closest friends, they form the Old But Not Yet Dead Club. Each member takes a turn planning a secret event for the group. This angers the residents, who are essentially jealous at being left out. Over the year, members of the group suffer various illnesses and you see them pull together to help each other. The journal also contains commentary on recent events, financial affairs, and conditions for the elderly throughout the world. There are also a lot of reflections on assisted suicide, which Mr. Groen fully supports and wishes for himself. Pro or con, it will make you think.This is a very enjoyable novel with a delightful protagonist. I found it interesting that the author decided to reveal very little about Mr. Groen’s life prior to being in the old age home. You find out just enough to know that his life has not been easy. The lack of backstory works here, as it keeps you focused on the present. This book has been compared to A Man Called Ove. There are some similarities, but Mr. Groen lacks the bite and bitterness of Ove. However, they both discover that it takes a village to make a life happy and full.

Taut, touching, witty prose. A diary for one year filled with emotionally astute observations of day to day life of an inmate of an old age home in Amsterdam. The pettiness, bravery and stoicism displayed by residents, staff and relatives in mostly mundane situations. The outside world as it pertains to those about to die, mostly their fears of further spending cuts. Railing against the administration. Organizing the "old but not dead club" with outings to break the tedium. Members slowly going senile or dying. Started as a project to avoid sinking into despondency, the author develops through his writing, both in self confidence and charity displayed to others. A mild mannered, likable rebel, he shows courage, humanity and the frailness of age. The book moves swiftly, despite its slow subject, and is a delightful read the reader is enervated by the Hendrik Groen's minor rebellions against the administration, his brave jaunts on his mobility scooter, his dandy dressing, his caustic comments about his fellow residents' foibles, maliciousness, jingoism, slowness and forgetfulness. Definitely worth five stars.

What an amazing read! Touching, insightful, laugh out loud funny, poignant- Hendrik and his friends felt so real that I fell in love with each and every one of his little band of merrymakers. This is how I want to be when I'm old...er.....! They are the kind of friends I want to have. No matter what your age this book will remind you of the things that truly matter in life- something to look forward to, and friends. Never stop living life to the fullest and enjoy every minute the best you can. As soon as I finished I began reading it again! I do hope "Hendrik" decides to continue his diary in another volume!!

At 83-1/4 years old Hendrick decides to quit being so easy to get along with and tell the world exactly what he thinks ... in his diary at least. Full of funny, quaint and poignant tales of living in a nursing home, he describes his fellow "inmates" in hilarious and heart-felt ways, facing life and death on a permanent basis, but always with compassion, understanding, and not a small sense of humor.It will make you laugh out loud, it may even make you cry ... but no matter what, you'll enjoy the ride. As any good book should do. A definite winner.

Hilarious. I read it in Dutch, and bought this for an English speaking friend. The only reason why I did not give it 5 stars is that the fine nuances and cultural details of Holland and Amsterdam or the Dutch jokes he makes do not come across as well in English....I loved it, and really makes you think about your own aging process in general. It is an easy read, written as a diary for each day of the year. In short, it is sweet, sad, funny, touching human story about growing old in a retirement home.

About the Author

Born in about 1332 in Shropshire, the son of a small Oxfordshire landholder, William Langland trained to be a priest but due to the death of his patrons he only took Minor Orders and was unable to advance in the Church. He wandered a good deal in England and lived an unconventional life, constantly writing verse. He died at the end of the century.

The poem of 'Piers the Ploughman' is often considered to be anonymously composed, as the name William Langland was less an authorial designation as it was an inscription on the back of a manuscript - it would be as if I would be assigned the authorship of the O.E.D. because, in some future time, the only remaining copy was missing the title pages, but still had the hard-cover with my 'ex libris' impression on it. Be that as it may, Langland is considered at least as likely an author as any other, and becomes a sort of stand-in, an 'everyman' for his time period. A few details of this Langland are known - he was a wanderer, a constant reviser (the poem goes through several revisions that scholars have designated as texts A, B, and C (and some argue for Z). This is not a spiritual autobiography, as J.F. Goodridge states in his introduction, but there are no doubt autobiographical elements in the text. That the lead character is named 'Will' helps in this identification.This poem stands alongside Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' as one of the great products of Middle English; this also has the character of being a different sort of Middle English than Chaucer's more courtly, continental influenced variety. Thus, it gives breadth to the history of the English language. Goodridge ranks Langland as a great English poet on a par with Spenser, Milton, Wordsworth and Yeats, as representative of his age both in topics as well as language facility.This epic poem deals with themes familiar for the time - like Dante and Milton, Langland deals with the grand ideas of the meaning of life and the destiny of humankind. However, unlike Dante and Milton, Will and Piers the Ploughman do not go through a mystical, otherworldly adventure or journey, but rather stays rooted to the earth. These are dream sequences, but these too need not be otherworldly - they are things that can happen to every person. The ideas of the seven deadly sins, the virtues, the church, and the images of heaven and hell are very much rooted to regular society images of the same. The discussion of the allegorical characters, aptly named Do-Well, Do-Better, and Do-Best, does much for the moral teaching of this poem, which would have been of primary concern to the author.Langland's text is often more Old English than Chaucerian in ways. It is far more alliterative, a strong component taken from Old English. Also, it is less metrical in rhythm than Chaucer - there is a pause in each line akin to older English poetry, but the metre is less secure.There is much to dispute in Goodridge's introductory essay and notes, because this is that kind of text that invites such disputation. There are over 50 non-related texts of the poem that have survived the Middle Ages, that vary from minor to major changes throughout. Reconciling these is rather like attempting to reconcile the gospels of the Bible, and then adding to that task the discovery of other non-canonical gospels. It leads to rich discussion, but less agreement.Goodridge does a good job at introducing the text and translating the text into a prose style. The one drawback of this is that the sense of the poem is lost. However, as an introduction and student/study version of the epic, it is a good text. The notes are generous and useful.This is one of the classics of English literature, perhaps the least known among them.

Langland's masterpiece, "Piers Plowman", is Middle English poetry that uses language that is more opaque that that of Chaucer, while expression ideas that are at the same time less translucent than Chaucer's. Whereas Chaucer writes to entertain and incidentally edify, Langland's writing aims squarely at the reform of society: his poetic genius is ever bent on conveying his message in the most effective ways it can devise. That those ways are diverse, and that the poem entwines itself around the reader's mind with a fine webbing of delicate strands, makes a first acquaintance with this work for the student of Middle English a potent, provocative, but somewhat overpowering experience. Help is needed. Goodridge's translation into modern English beautifully renders the sense of the poem in a direct and lyrical way. This may be contrasted with most verse translations that tend to be glosses rather than translations. Consider one fragment from the prologue: "Ac of the cardinales atte courte that caught of that name / And power presumed in hem a pope to make, / To han that power that Peter hadde inpugnen I nelle: / For in loue and letterure the eleccioun bilongeth -- / Forthi I can and can naught of courte speke more." What are we to make of "can and can naught"? A verse translation by Donaldson renders this as follows: "But as for the cardinals at court that thus acquired their name / And presumed they had power to appoint a pope / Who should have the power that Peter had -- well I'll not impugn them. / For the election belongs to love and to learning: / Therefore I can and cannot speak of court further." No doubt this has merit as poetry, but of what value is it as a translation? Any student could replace the Middle English words with the modern equivalent, and be no better off in understanding the sense of the piece. Consider, on the other hand, Goodridge's prose translation: "But as to those other cardinals at Rome who have assumed the same name, taking upon themselves the appointment of a Pope to posses the power of St. Peter, I will not call them in question. The election of a pope requires both love and learning. There is much more I could say about the Papal Court, but it is not for me to say it." While one may disagree with Goodridge's interpretations, one is never in doubt as to what they are. His prose is perfectly lucid, and often poetic. This is a wonderful introduction to Piers Plowman, and the notes and commentary that accompany the translation further enhance the value of this book, and serve even more as a key to unlocking the gates to this magical poem.

This man's writing is some of the most beautiful and true wording I've ever read. My book is in tatters from where I've read it and loaned it to people. (Admittedly, I'm on my second copy.) The only other book to do this to me was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. This is a must read. This man wrote my life by using completely different experiences than I had. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It helps if you know a lot about music, but it's still amazing if you don't.

Rob Sheffield is that most unique of critics. He breaks the rule that says you shouldn’t talk about yourself because of the self-indulgence, yet manages to do so in such a way that he shines new light on both the soul of music and the soul of man. That’s probably a bit dramatic, but it doesn’t make it less true.LOVE IS A MIX TAPE is a soulful book, written as a way of understanding not only love and loss, but the role music plays in helping us achieve even the tiniest bit of understanding. His recollection of his relationship to his wife, Renée, is filled with beautiful passages about discovery of love and self. But he also uses these moments to reveal truths about the music which inspired these recollections as well—I will never listen to Nirvana the same way again.It’s the best praise I can give to say that this book opens both your mind and your heart. Enjoy the laughs, the cool turns of phrase, and the constant desire to queue up another song from these playlists, but also make sure you keep a few Kleenex on the ready.

Nice book, if you love music. I read it on a trip to Charlottesville (where the story is set), and it transported me back to the 90s... The zillion musical references made me want to make mix tapes again! Not a masterpiece novel, but still well written, fun and easy to read, with an emotional side to the story that is almost comparable to a "coming-of-age" at some point. I recommend it!

Rob Sheffield's Love is a Mix Tape is a heart-breaking, uplifting, funny, sad and entirely human memoir about love and loss unified by Sheffield's love of music and his life-long penchant for crafting the mix tape. Music fans born in the 60's will recognize most of the music (and understand why, for example, the eighth grade dance mix tape had to have Free Bird and Stairway to Heaven to end the sides), but I don't think you have to know much about the music he mentions to enjoy this wonderful book because the book simply uses music as a way into his story about Renee. Renee was his wife with whom he shared an intense love and they found love through love of music as well. Renee died suddenly, tragically at a young age, but somehow Sheffield's engaging personality comes through so well in his writing that he makes this memoir overall an uplifting read, despite the undertones of intense sadness and loss. The love he has for Renee (and she for him) and the love of music, Sheffield's charming, self-deprecating humor makes this a wonderful read. I recommend this one to all, music-obsessed or not. Enjoy.

I have to say I would have enjoyed this book even without the deeply personal story of Rob losing his wife. In fact, I may have enjoyed it even more. I think I could have read an additional 600 pages of Rob reminiscing about the late 80s, early 90s, listing all of the music he and his wife listened to, bands they went to see, parties they attended and guilty pleasure television shows they watched together. What are there like 800 other people in the US who remember and know that Grenadine put out one of the best records of the 1990s???? So for that reason alone, I beg Mr. Sheffield to revise this book and keep it strictly to the good times. Ok and if that isn't actually possible, this is still a fine book, far surpassing my expectations.

Bought for my daughter....she loves it....older daughter has it also....they both think it is a great book...

Did not expect the book to be heartfelt and heart warming. Clearly each mixtape is crafted with great attention, and it translates to us, readers, who will likely be taken to sweet nostalgia as we begin seeing ourselves in each of the chapter written. It's a pleasing read, and an effortless page turner.

Do you know anyone who takes what life gives them but doesn't really have a plan of any kind? Actions only taken when given by a charismatic friend or when forced to by law, nature or an accumulation of unavoidable circumstances? Although this is a very touching love story and I really liked the author's direct style, I found the aimless, fatalistic existence a bit frustrating at times. The author did not make choices so much as acquiesce to events around him. He hates a song until someone tells them it's their favorite song - then, voila! He likes it too!I found the eclectic selections of music interesting and irritating at the same time. The crazy collection of disco, country, new wave, rock, etc. I always get the feeling someone is trying too hard to be uber-cool when they refer to some obscure song from a critically acclaimed but generally atonal band. What I DID like and in a way somewhat opposed to the prior comment is the appreciation for top 40 along with all the other esoteric stuff. Makes it seem more like someone who just likes what he likes irrespective of whether the music maker is from an "acceptable" genre.I thought the story, although very personal, was very touching. I won't ruin it for those who will read or listen to the book but I found the description of the relationship very moving. In my opinion, the author painted a very compelling image of what life was like with his love. I'm missing the humor part though. I've read some comments about how funny the book was. What? Did I miss a chapter or two? Funny in a kind of "oh yeah, my relatives are a little wacky too" way but not much more than that.Overall, a quick and compelling read that will make you feel and think. Maybe 3 and half stars...

This is nice in some ways because this book is in comic book form which is unusual for books that typically appeal to girls. However the story to me and my child was weird and drug out. It's one I easy said buy too.

I loved this book! The cover was kind of hard to keep on the front, but otherwise the story was fun and none of the pages were torn.

Great book that may help open a discussion on domestic abuse with students.

Inspires my child to read

We first saw this book at our library and checked it out. My 10 year old daughter really loved it and so we bought a copy for ourselves. We both enjoyed reading it together, and she's read it on our own and then she just started reading it again (to me -- which is fun for a change). This is a graphic novel, so much of the story line portrayed through illustration rather than words. I think there is a good balance between imagery and words, given that it is a graphic novel. We've recommended the book to friends and will enjoy repeated readings of it :)

My 8 year old loved it. It's a touching story with beautiful illustrations. It is difficult to read on a Kindle, however.

In an independently run aquarium by the sea, a man claiming to be Neptune runs daily shows and has his Fish Girl tantalize visitors with just enough of a glimpse to keep them coming back. For years, the Fish Girl has believed that the man really is Neptune, god of the sea. But visits from a human girl about her age prompt her to start questioning her world and all that she has known.I was super excited to hear that David Wiesner was making a graphic novel. He is one of my favorite illustrators. This did not disappoint. Wiesner's art is amazing as always. I can't imagine how long this took him to make! Napoli wrote a story that's a little bit of a Little Mermaid tale without any romantic elements. (It's also a little bit of a human slavery tale.) It draws you in slowly, you're not sure at first what to believe. And then you're cheering for a just ending. As a side note, I loved the girl's best friend octopus. It was a great unique choice of companion creature. A beautiful graphic novel great for fans of fantasy stories.Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content (the girl always has some strategic hair placement, other creatures around her, etc.). There's a natural disaster that causes some property damage, but no people get physically hurt.

I'm a huge fan of David Wiesner (his book Flotsam had no words at all but is fascinating for all ages; The Three Pigs has just a couple of sentences per page but is mind-bending and interesting for all ages), and this book is a step older, starting around age 8. It's still good for slower readers since there aren't a lot of words on any page; it's just that some are more advanced ("spectacle," "fortunate," "beautiful"). It doesn't have the gorgeous-gorgeous magical images of Flotsam but at first glance is closer to comic book / graphic novel style (you can use Amazon's "look inside" feature to get a sense of them). The magic in this book is once again in its schema-changing story. The fish-girl starts out in a kingdom that seems magical and loving, but over time you notice that all is not as it seems. It's a coming-of-age story in the sense of learning to re-evaluate your own surroundings, branching out even when it's uncomfortable and difficult, and, yes, finally achieving freedom and peace. It's an enjoyable graphic novel on its surface, but I also appreciated the subtle message that at some point you may have to find your own truth rather than relying solely on what other people tell you.

Though his name was very familiar to me, I hadn't known much at all about Andrew Breitbart until I listened to this book. I probably avoided him because I thought he would be just another Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, etc., willing to say anything to get noticed by conservatives. He wasn't. Breitbart was a keen observer, and as I listened I found myself constantly agreeing with his conclusions, especially with regard to Hollywood and the left. it was interesting to see him study the tactics of Saul Alinsky and use them against leftists who attacked him. I wish he were still alive so I could see his commentary on the election and all that has followed. Republican leadership is selling out those who voted them in, and I would love to hear what he would say.

I enjoyed learning about Andrew Breitbart's upbringing, critical life decisions, and transformations. Also, I was not aware that he was so involved in starting up the Huffington Post. Soon after moving on to build his big government Breitbart news network. The exciting part of the book was how James O’Keefe and Andrew took down Acorn and significantly exposed the big news networks of their liberal bias. He (RIP) and others started a movement, and I feel he would want us to continue the expansion efforts of the citizen journalist movement.

Andrews was an important figure for the modern independent media that we see today.Important not only for americans but to democracy, he inspires not only conservatives but everyone who apreciates freedom of speach.I just love the guy!

I've known for years about this book, but for some reason I never read it - Probably because I lumped Breitbart in with the Tea Party, to which he was closely associated. I lean conservative naturally, but I'm turned off by extremism - which I view the Tea Party as being. I even found the subtitle a bit egotistical, if I'm being honest.That all changed recently when I was looking for a book on the liberal media and the methods liberals use to tear everyone who's not with them down. Years ago I'd read Juan Williams's Muzzled - the Assault on Honest Debate. He framed a good argument after being victimized by the liberal machine, but there was virtually nothing in the way of execution. D'Souza never quite met the need - he focused more on Obama's motivations. There were a couple on my list regarding spin and media bias, but both were expensive. That's when I read the description for this book.Long story short - this was the book I've been looking for. Part biography, part history, part story, and part strategy, Righteous Indignation really nails the tactics used by what Breitbart terms the DMC - Democratic Media Complex. Rooted in Alinskyan Rules for Radicals strategy, the DMC doesn't attempt to push back on facts, it seeks to immediately attack the veracity and integrity of whomever is providing information it doesn't like without being concerned about such pesky things such as truth or integrity itself. Example after example, Breitbart demonstrates how he learned not only what was happening, but how to fight back. While certainly no angel, there's no denying that Breitbart knows and describes how to fight back while maintaining integrity.As always, your political leanings will determine how you feel about Breitbart and the book. But as someone upon whom Michael Moore's Farenheit 911 had the exact opposite of the intended effect - I enjoyed this book thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't believe there's bias in the media.

Andrew changed journalism forever. Perhaps more than anyone else, he pursued journalism the way it is supposed to be. Question everything, follow through, damn the politics and political correctness. His story is very compelling. You don't have to agree with him to appreciate how he elevated investigative journalism

This was an absolutely incredible book that made you feel as if you were sitting with Andrew and discussing life events. He has been a long standing hero of mine, but from a distance. I feel as if I've visited the heart of one of the truest patriots that ever lived. I also bought the audio version, which was an incredible experience to close your eyes and listen to his story. I don't think we fully appreciate what Andrew gave this country, but he will definitely be part of history. I thank him for his service to America. Mr. Breitbart's enthusiasm and courage in standing up for principle and against those who would destroy all that is good in America is contagious.I gave this book 5 stars because it was highly readable, relevant and exciting page turner. I stopped 20 times to google various names and topics to get the historical references. I came away from this book better informed and engaged in the news swirling around me. Read this book!

I wish this book was longer. Amazing short and scary true stories that make you think and realize that evil is real and can be found were you least expect it. Or it can find you.I've read many books that sound fake and made up stories about the paranormal but not this one . I recommend this book to everyone. Belivers and non believers alike. The final story in this book is about a non believer who was tricked to join a cult that claimed Demons are not real, and since he is a non believer he soon changed his beliefs and searched for the opposite of what he experienced. Evil manifested in a foul, grotesk hellish being before his eyes. Get this book. You won't be disappointed.

Very eye opening. I especially appreciate the emphasise put on the fact that the result doesn't always come right away and may be subtle enough to not connect the dots. Highly recommend for anyone who thinks "it's all harmless fun."

James Patterson does it again as a Master storyteller as he did in his other Middle School stories, making this one as good as 'The Worst Years Of My Life.' I find this story to be a golden winner of the series, simply because I was able to relate to events that took place, while having flashbacks of coping mechanisms and survival techniques. Of course most of us could relate to the funny, and not so funny activities that took place in middle school, and we never forget after the years have passed. But, I also related to the situations and feelings that Jamie Grimm experienced, because I've seen a great deal, and also have a special needs child. The authors clearly brought us all back to the immature groups, the bullies, and special people that reserve a place in your heart for a long time. Jamie had dreams like many, and he followed them, deserving respect and recognition of being a hero in many ways. He builds a brick wall to keep out the evil that spreads like wildfire from the bullies as he sets out on a mission to fulfill his dream. This intriguing story tugs at the heart as we learn that Jamie has a haunting past that he must deal with in order to move on. He is the average kid, who becomes unforgettable as he learns that there's a place for everyone in this world. This amazing story is a trip down memory lane for some, and a lesson learned for the new kid on the block as we take a good look at bullies, geeks, and the dreamers. Middle school kids will love this book. Brilliant, thought-provoking, funny, and touching. To sum it up, superb in every way!An enjoyable and educational read, with dynamic artwork. Highly recommended!

It was a decent book. No complaints. Well, maybe one. the jokes for fine. One or a two I did not get. Well, since this is a book review let's start.It is about a middle schooler named Jamie grim. He never says anything really about his past, and in a book review it spoiled the ending, but I wanted to see it first hand so I got the book. His step brother is an utter jerk. So if you don't like things like that then maybe you should not get this book.My favorite part is the end though.I am not going to be that one review that spoiled the end, so go to a another review if you want that... Or get the book!😏

My son, a fourth grader, and I read this book together each night before bed. We both loved it. He loved the bathroom humor - you know the farts, burps, and butt jokes that are so humorous at that age. And he also loved the serious side of the story. When Jamie tells "Cool Girl" about the horrific event that caused him to end up in a wheelchair, we both cried. When Jamie competes to be the funniest kid comic, we both laughed and cheered. I highly recommend this book. It helps children see the good and bad, the funny and tragic, while giving them a wonderful role model in the main character, Jamie.

This was my first James Patterson book. I didn't know quite what to expect, but I was in for a pleasant surprise. I read it because my fifth graders are devouring this middle school series and recommended that I read some of his books. They know that I read a lot of the books they are reading because I like to be able to discuss the books with students and I totally enjoy reading children's books for pleasure. It was an easy read and had a great message about being comfortable with yourself, no matter who you are. It had some similar themes to the widely popular book, "Wonder" by Palacio, which I also liked. This book has even engaged some of my reluctant readers. I ordered four of the titles for our classroom library.

Good for middle school aged children. It's actually very sad and not all that funny. But, it's a great story.

This is a great book. It's funny, includes a whole cast of characters, and not everything is perfect for the main character. A great story for middle school aged kids or for someone who wants a laugh. It's a great combination of funny and possible real life.

Gave the book to our grandson. At first he was not intrigued and saw nothing that applied to him. As he got into the book he started to enjoy it. He has now ordered two more books.

I read to my 8 year old son, every night, before bed. It all started with Rafe K. and the Middle School books and continued into Jamie Grimm and the I Funny series. We both love the stories and the characters and even talk about them when we're not reading! Keep them coming!

This book is hilarious! WARNING: Spoilers! I funny is about middle schooler Jamie Grimm who is in a wheelchair. My sister is also in a wheelchair, so I can relate.I would recommend this book for kids who liked diary of a wimpy kid, and big Nate. Or kids who are in 4th or 5th that really like to read.I know it is not free, but it is definitely worth it!There are 69 chapters of James Patterson magic!
