This is an engrossing read about Kate Betts's years in Paris in the late 80s-early 90s. If you have ever wanted to live in Paris, or meet Yves St. Laurent, or if you just want to read a good story well told (with a dash of A Sentimental Education), this is the summer book for you. The prose is clear and vivid, and the stories are good with just the right amount of doubt about some of the exclusionary aspects and unkindnesses of both French society and the fashion world. While there is romance in the book, the real focus is a young woman finding herself in the working world and coming to terms with her ambitions and her doubts. That's important for women, especially young women, to think about. This would be an ideal gift for a young college graduate making her (or his) way in the world.

I loved My Paris Dream. About the time Kate Betts went to Paris, I went to New York City. So, I felt she was writing about my experience. While New York City was glamorous to me, a kid from Colorado, Kate's Paris experience was wonderful. I loved reading about the Parisians and the places she went and the clothes she wore. I went through much of that in NYC, changing my dress, my habits and ideas about life. Kate is so frank in the book about her thoughts, the people she lived and worked with, the places she traveled to and her career. Her evolution into an adult and career woman was intriguing. I hated to put the book down. I wanted to know more about what was going on in Kate's life. I LOVE Paris, but can't imagine assimilating into the Parisian life style. She brought it to life. I love this book; if you love fashion, Paris, Europe or coming of age books, this is one to read.

It was fun to live vicariously through Kate Betts and experience what it would have felt like to both be in the fashion world, as well as the fashion capital in the 1980s. It was interesting to see that she never really assimilated, despite becoming fluent in the language and having close French relationships.

I was initially attracted to this book because of the post-graduation year in France - I, too, went to France for a year after college, though I was in Aix-en-Provence vs. Paris and was a student vs. a worker. Along the way I discovered other points of commonality with the author: she went to Choate, I went to Choate; she went to Princeton, I went to Princeton; she is a writer and editor, I am a writer and editor; she lived (lives?) and worked (works?) in New York, I lived and worked in New York. All of that aside, the book holds enormous appeal for anyone interested in France, fashion, or simply the experience of being a young American abroad. Her descriptions of the French, their mores, their habits, their music, their food, their way of life, all ring true and take us right into the heart of the French world and society. But in my view the author is at her best in her introspective reflections on her coming of age. This, in the end, is the real value of the book to me. The fashion aspect - yeh, I can take it or leave it, central to her story though it is. Refreshing, written in an honest and appealing style, masterful at times, a book to recommend to friends and return to. Bien fait et merci, Katherine. I look forward to more from this writer.

I loved this book. I got to live vicariously in Paris for the years the author was there. I’ve been to Paris before but I didn’t know all the unwritten rules that she shares here. I like fashion too, and found the behind the scenes information interesting. What a life!

If you're interested in fashion, this is a great book on styles and trends beginning in the 80's when the big fashion houses were coming into their own. Kate is dropped right in the middle of it soon after graduating from Princeton. Her french friend, Bibianne and her children help develop her french language skills, as well as her new boyfriend, Herve, who is most patient with a young, ambitious woman looking to get ahead as a young journalist working for a fashion magazine. Kate faces plenty of pressure as she starts to scale the corporate ladder. There is enough back-biting and jealousies festering to load up a Louis Vuitton trunk. Still, Kate manages to find the good flaneurs to enjoy the glory of France and fashion both! A fun, fast-paced read!

I love fashion and I love Paris, still I was skeptical about this book, but I enjoyed it enormously. Kate Betts writes beautifully and depicts her journey as a young woman entering into a career and a city with charming frankness. I found her intriguing rather than pompous. Glimpses into the publishing and fashion world were fun, too. The characters in her personal life were undeveloped--but perhaps this is because she gave them scant attention at the time.

Kate Betts has written a frank, nostalgic and intimate account of her youth in Paris where she goes as an au pair after graduation. Ultimately she ends up writing for the Paris bureau of Women's Wear Daily and thus begins her foray into the heady, ego-driven world of haute couture. Betts, who later on worked at Vogue, writes with great passion and insight into how living and working in Paris in her twenties helped shape her identity.

I had the 7th edition for a prior semester and for the life of me I can't figure out why they put out a new edition that has already proven to have out of date information. Oh, wait.........yes, I can. Money! Buyer BEWARE! The expiration dates on software trials are not current nor correct. Clio now only offers a 7-day trial instead of the 12-month trial. CaseMap and Timemap only offer 30-day trials instead of the 120 days listed in this text. Not sure about the other ones but I would assume they have changed also. You will also run into issues in the hands-on activities in each chapter that use the third-party software because the instructions are outdated. I would suggest you rent this book rather than buy it.

It has stickers seemingly giving you access to Cengage Brain online but does not. If your class requires the only version as well, this book did not provide any online access codes therefore I had to return it

Not bad in concept, it is riddled with misprints. Some sneaky, some just stupid. The diagram 'explaining" the difference between "while" and "loop until" logic is a case in point. Gibberish. It gets better when the typos are in the quizzes used to reinforce learning, changing the meaning and context of questions by substituting whole words. One of the authors keeps making references to Java and EJB references to "clarify" things. If you have no formal Java training, these will sail over your head. Another uses explanations more suited to a child's classroom. What was the audience for this book again?I'm not saying the bok's contents aren't useful or can't be figured out, just that the whole thing needs editing again for unified feel and proof-reading to get rid of all the tuspid yptos.Don't pay full price for it, and start with a bit of SQL knowledge to typo-proof yourself and you should feel OK

I'll echo some comments of other reviewers. For a novice, I would NOT highly recommend the book, only because it feels like the author feels that you should have a good grasp of basic programming and of PL/SQL. The one thing that if I were a novice (which I'm not - Senior Oracle Developer with 17+yrs experience) is that topics that are discuss reference topics in upcoming chapters which he says you should reference. To me that's not good. Every chapter should build on the previous chapter. In one chapter he does this perfectly when reference coding examples (chapter on Triggers).Other than that, I do like Oracle Press Books and I bought this workbook as I'm studying for my Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate certification and I liked the practice questions/answers at the end of each chapter. This helps reinforce concepts I already know and highlight other concepts I was unaware of or had misconceptions about.

This was a valuable resource to me as I am just learning oracle. It is important to understand where this will fit into your learning. The text is not difficult to understand, but you should some have some base experience in some kind of programming language. This book is very good at just telling you exactly and simply how to write PL/SQL. There are 12 chapters with topics like 'functions,' 'objects,' 'error management,' etc... so you shouldn't really expect to get lost anywhere. That is really why I enjoyed this book, it was very straighforward. Chapter, concept, example, summary, exercises. By the end of the book you will be able to at least read and understand any code you come accross and write a few dandy procedures. This was my experience. The thing with learning SQL is just if you try to learn just through google you will find a ton of resources on MySQL and only some on Oracle by comparison. And a lot of the oracle stuff you find will just be MySQL solutions ported over on forums which post WRONG 'guessed' code. And within that the help you will find on PL/SQL is sparse at best. Yes I know there is always the full documentation on oracle.com(ZZZzzzzzzzz).I bought oracles other DBA handbook before this and also have SQL books from MS and o reilly. This book is my favorite so far when comparing format and easyness of reading.

This is a great guide for those who have some databases knowledge. It refers basic vocabulary that a DBA should have in order to understand the basic concepts. It contains examples and tips that show you how to create a queries. It will also be a good exercise if you work along with his web site, you will be able to clarify your doubts.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone studying PL/SQL or desiring to improve their skills in PL/SQL. The author is very knowledgeable on the topic and explains it in a fairly straightforward fashion allowing for relatively quick understanding of the topic. As always it requires effort to develop skills but this book makes doing so much easier then any other book of this type. I recommend this book heavily for the use of students and professionals.

This book has the same issues for programming newbies as other books of this type (yes, even in the 'for Dummies' books). The issues are as follows.1. New terminology/functions is introduced without being fully explained in the text nor is there a reference to where this information can be found.2. Code samples contain code that has not been covered yet or contains exceptions to the rules being taught.3. As new information is taught, the sample code for that particular section contains too many differneces from the code used in the sample code from the immediately preceeding section. The first one is frustrating but a quick search on-line can usually give a more thorough definition of a term or the syntax for a funtion (c.f. try to find "guard-on-entry loop").The last two are the more trying because the sample code is not really searchable. Samples code should build on previous examples and only introduce the new coding currently being covered. Too many new and unexplained functions, clauses, or statements confuse the newbie.

Product is perfect for folks who have used PL/SQL for years as a refresher and way to catch up on/practice the art of PL/SQL as well as see whats new!

Great book to help me with some refreshing on PL/SQL , I definitely pull it out every now and then for a lil refresher on the subject.

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I read this book to improve my knowledge of Solaris. Previous reviewers express widely differing opinions of "Solaris Administration: A Beginner's Guide" (SA:ABG). These reactions seem to be based on their expectations of the book. If you need an in-depth Solaris reference, buy "Solaris 8: The Complete Reference." If you want an introductory text with more content than "Solaris for Managers and Administrators," try SA:ABG.Solaris users have traditionally suffered a lack of good third-party administration books. While not as useful as the excellent "Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide," SA:ABG gives the reader enough information to start administering Solaris machines. This is a practical book, showing how to install the OS, use the shell, and add/remove/create packages. As a Solaris advocacy book, SA:ABG also shows Windows and Linux admins how their favorite GUI or command-line features have Solaris counterparts.Certain aspects of SA:ABG pleasantly surprised me. For example, chapter 8 shows how to use 'truss' to trace system calls, and gives brief descriptions of /proc tools like pflags, pcred, pmap, and so on. Chapter 19 explained why NIS and NIS+ are still useful on a DNS-enabled network, and made comparisons to the Windows 2000 Active Directory. I also appreciated learning how to use Samba tools like nmblookup, smbclient, and smbstatus to interface with Windows or Samba servers. On the negative side, SA:ABG's security chapter explained how to disable services started by inetd, but didn't fully describe how to disable non-inetd services using /etc/init.d/ scripts. This sort of advice is critical for newbie Solaris admins. Solaris offers a slew of network services by default; disabling the majority of them is a priority. I also believe the sample bash scripts on pages 113-117 could have used clearer syntax, using brackets where needed.I have yet to read "THE" Solaris administration book, suitable for beginners and wizards alike. If you're new to Solaris, SA:ABG is a good place to start. If you need advanced instruction, keep looking!(Disclaimer: A received a free review copy from the publisher.)

Saludos.Piyux.

I bought this book to help me transition from HP/UX to Solaris. I hoped it would provide me with Solaris specific information for common unix administrative tasks.Unfortunately I was sadly disappointed. The book covers many topics but the information provided is so minimal as to be useless. For example the book gives you detailed information on what information is contained in sendmail packets, but doesn't tell you much of anything about how to install or configure sendmail. In addition there are many typos and errors in the book which is very distracting from the content.Over all I was very disappointed in this book. It provides a very high level overview for someone that has never used a Unix system before, but is definetely not for anyone familiar with Unix. ....

I hesitate to write a review, since I haven't actually bot this book yet: I keep ALMOST buying it (about 6 times!), because it has several (even 5-10) chapters that aren't in any other Solaris book, but some look very sparse. So, it's far from a "complete" reference, but I suspect it has many "little piles" of info which would be well worth the price. (Comments from REAL users of THIS book?? Maybe someone will prompt me to finally move this to the top of my "buy NOW" priorities;-) )

The book is excellent for an introduction to Solaris for Windows Administrators. I am a Windows Systems Engineer, interested in learning Solaris...but I have been sitting around waiting for Solaris 8 certification books to be printed. This is an excellent introductory to the world of Sun and the "Solaris Way". A lot of references comparing how things are done in the Windows world to help with orientation. The one bad thing is the Author is a bit Solaris pushy...suggesting that Solaris is the smartest idea for all environments and all situations. He also beats up on Linux a bit...which may be justified, but not in this book.

This book seriously rocks - I have been responsibility for managing Linux and Solaris boxes for the past year (I'm a NT guru, but a UNIX newbie). Until I had this book, I was pretty much too scared to login to the boxes. Now, I understand how all the services seem to fit in together. This book doesn't have all the detail I'm lookin for - but it sure gave me the right pathways to find it. All the examples I tried worked first time, and now I'm confident doing DNS, Samba, Sendmail and DHCP. Well done guys!

Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, by Greg Mortenson

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Mortenson’s best-seller, Three Cups of Tea (2009), introduced his commitment to peace through education and became a book-club phenomenon. He now continues the story of how the Central Asia Institute (CAI) built schools in northern Afghanistan. Descriptions of the harsh geography and more than one near-death experience impress readers as new faces join Mortenson’s loyal “Dirty Dozen” as they carefully plot a course of school-building through the Badakshan province and Wakhan corridor. Mortenson also shares his friendships with U.S. military personnel, including Admiral Mike Mullen, and the warm reception his work has found among the officer corps. The careful line CAI threads between former mujahideen commanders, ex-Taliban and village elders, and the American soldiers stationed in their midst is poetic in its political complexity and compassionate consideration. Using schools not bombs to promote peace is a goal that even the most hard-hearted can admire, but to blandly call this book inspiring would be dismissive of all the hard work that has gone into the mission in Afghanistan as well as the efforts to fund it. Mortenson writes of nothing less than saving the future, and his adventure is light years beyond most attempts. Mortenson did not reach the summit of K2, but oh, the heights he has achieved. --Colleen Mondor

~In THREE CUPS OF TEA, Greg Mortenson builds his first school in a feral part of Pakistan. In, STONES INTO SCHOOLS, Greg shows us what truly amazing things even the simplest, weakest, least valued, and the most neglected among us are capable of achieving.Greg believes that the conflict in Afghanistan can be won with books, pencils, and other tools of socioeconomic well-being. After reading these two books, I'm convinced that this is true. He says, "to deprive Afghan children of education, is to bankrupt the future of the country, and doom any prospects of Afghanistan becoming someday a more prosperous and productive state."Greg and his incredible team are especially great at advocating for girls' education. He explains the `Girl Effect' by showing us how young women have the biggest potential for creating change in a developing world. This is an exceptionally inspiring book; I strongly recommend both, THREE CUPS OF TEA, and, STONES INTO SCHOOLS. This (STONES INTO SCHOOLS) was also the book that I choose to be the first that I purchased and read through my new Kindle. Neither one let me down in even the slightest way.[...]

Those who have read Greg Mortenson's previous book, THREE CUPS OF TEA, have no need of any detailed review of STONES INTO SCHOOLS. The latter book has the same marvelous descriptions, narration, and upbeat tone as the former. If you were impressed by the first, you will love the second for all the same reasons. By no means is reading THREE CUPS OF TEA a prerequisite for understanding and enjoying STONES INTO SCHOOLS, and the later book can be read first or without ever touching the earlier one, but why would anyone intentionally deprive himself of the experience of reading both? They are equally excellent as well as instructive. Now, if I do nothing but shower STONES with encomia, this review would be, at best, unbalanced, so allow me to pick a single nit. I don't believe that Greg Mortenson wrote it. Throughout this entire biographical, historical, non-fiction work, Mortenson is rushing hither and yon in Afghanistan and Pakistan, holding jirga (conferences) with village elders, befriending former mujahadeen commanders, soliciting the support of American military officers, corralling construction supplies, and ferrying cash through hostile territory to pay teachers. When he finds himself back in the United States, he's continually on speaking tours to colleges, universities, book clubs, military academies, civic organizations, and public schools. Greg Mortenson has no time to write a book, and I am not at all ready to credit him as the author of this one. My skepticism is more or less confirmed in the Acknowledgements section (pages 381 - 382) when Mortenson thanks "two dedicated writers," Mike Bryan and Kevin Fedarko, for their "marathon efforts ... to bring this book to the finish line...."So there it is: Greg Mortenson's name on the dust jacket and the title page notwithstanding, he is not the author, but you know, that is almost entirely beside the point. The point is that this book, like its predecessor, is about Greg Mortenson's efforts, and those of the entire Central Asia Institute staff, to accomplish something positive, far reaching, and significant in a region of harsh topography and climate, a region that has been wracked by warfare for three decades, that has endured invasions by two major world powers, the USSR and the USA, and that is under continuing attack by reactionary Taliban fighters. The amazing thing is the extent to which these efforts have succeeded and are still succeeding.STONES INTO SCHOOLS is inspirational. It reads like a fictional adventure book. The action never flags. The suspense is tangible. The reader is determined to see how Mortenson or one of his compatriots can overcome the next challenge, and those challenges keep coming one after another. As we read, we wonder when Hollywood will come out with the movie version--and then we remember that this is not fiction at all, and we are amazed at the real-life drama unfolding in the pages. Moreover, we glimpse the peaceful, beautiful and friendly sides of countries and peoples that are too often portrayed in the media as stark, barren, and hostile. And we see a people with a tradition of illiteracy exhibiting a terrible thirst for education. In short, both THREE CUPS OF TEA and STONES INTO SCHOOLS are, in retrospect, both sobering and instructional, yet both read like exciting adventure stories. For whom might I recommend these books? That's an easy one, for the answer is "everyone" from middle-school students to senior citizens. I honestly feel that you, whoever you may be, will enjoy the trip through these books and will come to the end of your literary journey a wiser person despite the fact that you enjoyed every step along the way!

This book is a follow on to Three Cups of Tea, which is a riveting saga of building elementary schools particularly for Afghani girls. In this book much has been already accomplished and we see some fill in data that was glossed over in the first book along with much new follow on story. Both books taken together are a very uplifting story of what can be accomplished against impossible odds with steady perseverance and a very good attitude towards other cultures. I think these two books are a "must read" for anyone, but especially Americans.

Greg Mortenson is an obsessive. A good kind of obsessive, obviously. Known as "Dr. Greg" throughout large stretches of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Greg Mortenson was first obsessed with a couple of things: climbing mountains, and his little sister's Christa's courage and determination at living with epilepsy. After her death, Mortenson decides to climb K2 as a final tribute to her, but is distracted by a life-saving errand before he can summit the mountain. On his way back, having failed to fulfill his obsessive need to memorialize his sister, he gets lost and almost dies before meeting the villagers of Korphe, Pakistan, and, before he leaves their company, forms his new obsession. His new obsession, which combines facing insurmountable odds with improving the lives of little girls, is still playing out, and it demonstrates many things, starting with the power of one person to change the world for the better. If American citizens cannot control the expenditure of their tax dollars to make war in Afghanistan, we can at least contribute money to the Central Asia Institute to fund a far more efficient project that spreads the extraordinarily liberating results of basic education for children, especially girls. That at least 33% of the children going to school in their new buildings should be girls is written into the contracts CAI signs with the communities it builds schools in. And there's evidence that a tendency to obsession is an inherited trait, as Mortenson's father spent twenty years building a hospital in Africa, one whose every department would soon be headed by an African. Giving up is not a Mortenson trait.Three Cups of Tea told the story of the Central Asia Institute's first years, and touched hearts, minds, school children in possession of pennies, and adults with checkbooks across this country. Mortenson was building primarily in Pakistan in Three Cups of Tea. In Stones Into Schools, he invades Afghanistan (in the middle of a war) with the help of a star member of his Dirty Dozen employees and acquires new Afghani personnel, who, it occurs to me, are just as likely to be obsessives as Mortenson is. Accomplishing what CAI accomplishes is not a job for wimps or dawdlers. Both books are adventure tales of the highest order--the dangers are real, the army of school builders is brave physically, culturally, and politically. To obsessives, educating the children, is so much more important than living a comfortable life, or even living past the end of the week. Mortenson tells more of the story himself in Stones, and I prefer the style of the second book to the first. In Three Cups of Tea, David Oliver Relin produced the final text, and its stylistic felicities do not triumph over the sheer length of many of his sentences. Mortenson and his research assistants in Stones are more merciful to the reader who wants to arrive at the predicate of the sentence with some idea of that the subject was. Each of these books is an adventure story, a travelogue with the texture and richness of a good novel, with sympathetic and admirable characters, a history lesson about a part of the world most of us know little about, and a wonderfully inspiriting account of a gently obsessive man's arrival at the top of a much tougher mountain than K2. Read both books and applaud, and send some money if you can.

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?High-quality, full-color photographs and an attractive format will quickly engage young readers' interest in this general introduction to penguins and their habits. Basic facts about anatomy, food, enemies, and young are presented in both text and accompanying photos. Although the pictures are excellent, detailed information about them is listed in the back of the book instead of in captions?an awkward arrangement for children. Also, the author occasionally anthropomorphizes the birds' behaviors. The section on "growing up" does not mention the age at which most species reach adulthood. No mention is made of penguins' vulnerability to oceanic pollution and human disturbance of nesting sites. Mary Ling's Penguin (DK, 1993) also presents simple facts, but is intended for younger readers.?Barbara B.
