Review

“Striking stories. . . . Lee is a master.”—New York Times Book Review“Beautifully written.”—NPR “Lee is a gifted storyteller and those first few chapters will grab you and keep you riveted all the way to the end.”—Bon Appétit  “Capture[s] what the nation’s melting pot cuisine is today.”—Food & Wine, Staff Favorite “Part adventure tale, part memoir. . . . Don’t hit the beach without this remarkable book in your bag.”—Fine Cooking   “Conjure[s] writers as diverse and compelling as Alexis de Tocqueville, M.F.K. Fisher and Anthony Bourdain. . . . Powerful, poignant, and timely.”—Atlanta Journal-Constitution   “Lee peels open the layers of what it means to be American today. . . . [Buttermilk Graffiti] contains a level of awareness that’s often missing from chef memoirs. . . . Lee is just as well-read and reflective as master of the genre Anthony Bourdain, but he brings a fresh take.”—Eater “Raw, gritty. . . . Each chapter in Buttermilk Graffiti presents a new adventure.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch   “Lee is consistently willing to dive into unfamiliar places and challenging conversations to get stories that haven’t yet been told, and the reader emerges from Buttermilk Graffiti richer for his efforts. . . . Buttermilk Graffiti represents exactly the kind of inquiry that helps create a vibrant national food scene. It’s not a flavor-of-the-week Nutella lasagna recipe turned hashtag, and it’s not a reality food competition. The book is one hyper-curious chef, on the road, meeting people in places that haven’t already been covered to death and discovering what they eat and what makes it special. Based on the stories that Lee tells, the journey was valuable unto itself—and we’re just fortunate to get to tag along with him.”—Christian Science Monitor   “A tapestry of American cuisine. . . . Lee’s elevation of the often anonymous people behind the food we eat speaks to his concern with not just style, but substance.”—Los Angeles Times “Like all great food writers, [Lee is] always on the verge of declaring the thing he is currently chewing on to be among the greatest things he’s ever eaten. He will eat two West Virginia slaw dogs before 8 a.m. and stay up all night on your porch drinking whiskey. . . . He’s so amiable that as you read the book, you can easily imagine that he’s a friend.”—The Wall Street Journal “A great romp of a read with humor, poignancy, and—for people who love food—a page turner.” —Edible DC   “Altogether eye-popping. . . . Buttermilk Graffiti is a timely and important work that reminds readers that America’s melting pot is alive and well in the most unexpected places. And, that we all belong.” —New York Journal of Books “Excellent. . . . Lee celebrates unexpected confluences of cuisines while refusing to be limited by definitions of ‘authenticity.’”—Publishers Weekly, starred review “An acclaimed chef and restaurateur travels across the country to explore the cultural history behind the evolving American cuisine. Lee . . . points out the essential role that both immigrants and longtime settlers play in the food we eat. . . . A heartfelt and forward-thinking book.”—Kirkus Reviews “At a time when America’s melting-pot culture frightens so many citizens, Lee finds hope and joy in visiting ethnic communities all across the nation’s breadth.”—Booklist   “Part adventure tale, part food treatise, part memoir, Buttermilk Graffiti is all Edward Lee: wide-eyed, profane, hungry for life, ever soulful, and poetic. In prose that’s as gorgeous and honest as his cooking, Lee takes us on an irresistible journey into the amazing diversity of flavors and traditions that truly makes this country great. An essential American story.”—Chang-rae Lee, winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist   “Restlessly curious, unafraid, and empathetic, Edward Lee reports and writes like a narrative journalist with a side interest in squash schnitzel and pickle juice gravy. You won’t read a smarter book about American food culture this year.”—John T. Edge, author of The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South   “With the release of Buttermilk Graffiti, Edward Lee proves himself to be one of our country’s great chroniclers of culture. Going all the way back to de Tocqueville, the most informative and impactful writing has examined class, society, culture, assimilation, and food. Lee now joins that long list of food/culture warriors, deciphering our modern world through what we can learn from its food and inspiring us to look at what we eat, where it comes from, who is cooking it, and why. In today’s political and social climate, this book is as timely as it is important.”—Andrew Zimmern, chef, teacher, author, and host of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern “Buttermilk Graffiti is a masterfully narrated passion tour of some of this country’s most revelatory places to eat and the people behind them, written in Edward Lee’s socially conscious style. It left me enlightened and hungry.”—Toni Tipton-Martin, author of The Jemima Code: Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks

On one hand, Buttermilk Graffiti gives us the dramatic sweep of American Regional food in the 21st Century. As in 1939's United States Regional Cookbook, and Molly O'Neill's 2010 One Big Table, this food reflects place and people who've come from near and far. Edward Lee is as much an anthropologist and philosopher as he is gifted chef. His odyssey never nods, even as he questions his voyeurism and the possibility that he is appropriating someone else's cuisine. One the other hand, the recipes will require serious kitchen time to understand what he's done with the inspirations he found. I've not yet had time to do that. As an expatriated Southerner, my first recipe test will be the Lacy Cornbread, the last recipe in this tour-de-force.

Edward Lee references being an English major once-upon-a-time and his love of language and narrative comes through in this work. Although a few regionally inspired recipes are located at the end of each chapter, this is not cookbook. It is a journey to discover the origins of an American cuisine, if that even really exists.I marveled at Lee's gumption and inquisitive nature that took him to very unfamiliar neighborhoods that make up the melting pot. He also is transparent and vulnerable, letting us know when he does feel totally out of place. He also describes how Seattle will ever be linked in his mind with his father's death and the similarities of the immigrant communities with his own family's story.A truly innovative, encapsulating and evocative view of what makes up our country through the foods we nourish ourselves with.

This is a terrific book- I have followed Edward Lee's career and know his skills as a chef, but his writing is superb. He traveled all over the U.S. to eat in ethnic neighborhoods that are assimilating. I get emotional reading any cookbook, but this is beautifully written too. MFK Fisher meets John Steinbeck in 'Travels with Charley'.

This is not just a cookbook by a celebrated chef, its a piece saturated with literary value. It would be an underestimation to only take into account the great recipes that run through the book, the stories interwoven in it are compelling and beautifully written. This book is one not only to cook from, but to savor its words with a good tumbler of bourbon.

I so enjoyed watching this talented chef on Top Chef but was a little disappointed in the book. Not many useful recipes for this home cook. Good story of his journey.

Edward Lee’s voice is lyrical and compassionate. He made me feel as though I was sitting and eating with him as he went from restaurant to restaurant connecting with locals.

Great read! Good stories along with many recipes I’m looking forward to trying out. Can’t wait!

The stories and food that Edward Lee presents is honest and worth learning about. Recipes are at the end of each regional story.

I've been following Robyn for a while because I really enjoy her laid back be-healthy-but-eat-cake-at-the-party advice. She doesn't err too strict but she's not lax either. In this book, I particularly liked her emphasis on digestive health because so much is being discovered about the gut as both a central part of the body's immune system as well as its surprising role in mood regulation. As a vegetarian I also liked that most of the recipes in Robyn's book are plant-based, although she does offer some modifications. PS - Her detox salad is delicious. :)

I am LOVING this book (seriously...I read it at night before bed. I'm dangerously close to sleeping with it cuddled next to me). Robyn has some great tips and tricks for helping you digest much better - and some awesome gut-friendly recipes.

I absolutely love this book! It's like sitting down with your best friend talking about the real struggle with diets, fads, quick fixes and ultimately ourselves. I love that she wove in true spiritual truths into this amazing book about digestion!I read the entire book within 1 week! Thank you for speaking your truth. Here is a pic of the Spicy Sweet Potato Soup I made ( I like it with the hearty veggies). With deep gratitude - JD

I adore this book! It is so visually beautiful, is packed with easy to understand education regarding gut health, super simple tips to incorporate into your daily routine, and drool-worthy recipes. It's quickly become one of my go-to books for gut health info and super yummy recipes.

I've been eagerly anticipating Go with Your Gut from the moment I found out that Robyn was writing it. I settled in with my favorite tea and devoured every word the moment I received my copy. Robyn has been my gut health guru for years and her wisdom, approach, and intuition are unmatched. In Go with Your Gut, Robyn offers all of her best tips, practices, and recipes to help readers change their relationship with food and their body. It is the perfect balance of practical and spiritual, information and action items. Robyn breaks down why a healthy gut is so important and how to clean up your gut and nourish your body with ease and while having a great time.I love how the book is organized - in each chapter Robyn shares personal stories and coaching information along with simple but incredibly effective practices for the reader to implement. And the recipes are beyond delicious! [You need to try the pumpkin muffins!]Go with Your Gut will leave your belly happier, your mind clearer, your body more energized, and your connection to your intuition stronger!

One of my very favorite go-to's for healthy eating - some of the most delicious recipes I've ever made! Robyn is an amazing health coach and speaks the truth about fueling your body with the best foods + hydration. This colorful, happy and informative book is separated into clear, succinct sections celebrating sweets, savory meals, liquids, etc. Her soups are A++ and the muffins are on a repeat at his house (you'll just have to buy it to find out what they taste like!). Robyn - thank you for making cooking easy, fun and healthy!

I was excited to get my very own copy of Go With Your Gut and jumped right in on how to become a smarter and healthier eater. So far so great! I plan on trying out a recipe a day. We had the Kale, white bean and fennel soup tonight. It was so easy to make and delicious! It is written in such a clever and fun way that I can easily follow Robyn's recipes and methods and enjoy every minute. Get your copy before they sell out! Thank you Robyn!!!

I'm a pretty particular eater - mostly vegan, no soy, careful to food combine - however I found the recipes very easy to modify. The lemony lentil soup is I think the best soup I've ever made. Perfect balance of flavors! I've followed Robyn in social media for a few years and really love her energy, which was apparent throughout the book. I appreciate the mind-body aspects of the book as well. Highly recommend!

Well... that's where the problems come in.First of all, let me say this, so that anybody reading the review has some idea of where the reviewer is coming from. I used to use AE quite a bit several years ago, but I basically haven't touched it since at least 2014. So there's a LOT I don't remember too clearly about exactly how everything works, and it's a complex program, obviously. And just as obviously, there have been a lot of updates (even though the basics are the same.) I always used the Trish and Chris Meyer books in the past, but the last published edition was in 2010. So, as far as books... there aren't a lot of choices. There are a lot of random videos out there, and there's also lynda.com (more about that later), but there are just not many selections at all for the old school analog book.First, the good: This book is well-written, and the examples are clear. The tutorials are fun and well-paced, also well-explained. The basics are... well, KIND OF basically covered (shape, text, animation, layers, masks, puppet tools, rotobrush, color correction, 3D features included the camera tracker, advanced editing, rendering.) The problem came in when I started thinking about how well this would all work for someone who was a REAL beginner rather than a past user who just hadn't picked up the new edition for a few years. Because the truth is, the basics aren't really covered, and here's the proof.Look at an old copy of the last Trish and Chris Meyer 2010 book, *Creating Motion Graphics With After Effects.* I have a copy on the desk right now. It's 752 pages. The Classroom in a Book is 399 pages. Yep-- 752 pages to cover the OLDER version, and 388 pages to cover the NEWER version, with all the added features. Lots and lots and lots of the essentials have been cut out. Look for a list of keyboard shortcuts-- it's not there. Look for the older, much longer chapters going into detail about fundamental concepts like layers and keyframes and editing-- not there. Look for xyzabc etc etc etc... not there. In 388 pages, it CAN'T be there. So why not just go to a source like lynda . com, you ask? I've had that membership for a long time, and I think I might even renew it again. THAT is where Trish and Chris Meyer went, and their instructional videos are there. But here's the problem with a video lesson format: you're tied to the pace and teaching methods decided on by the people who *made* the videos. There is no reference manual. And that's what the Classroom in a Book desperately needed to be. I do not have a lot of patience for going through videos and spending literally ten or twenty times the amount of time I would spend to look up something in a true reference book. Sometimes, we need specific pieces of information easily and quickly accessible and put together in an understandable way rather than having to sit through several twenty minute videos to try to figure out something very specific that we want to do. (The Adobe help and user forums are absolutely not a solution either, which is too bad.) What really needed to happen is for Trish and Chris Meyer to keep coming out with books, whether in print or online format. That's really what they should do-- online editions of updated AE books-- instead of 100% sticking to videos That is the strongest aspect of the Classroom book, btw-- when you buy it, you can go online to peachpit press and use the online version. But I don't think it's enough. I haven't decided yet if I'll be returning this book, but that might happen, even though it isn't exactly bad... it's just not good enough.PROS:Does have some good infoTutorials are well writtenDoes cover some of what you need to knowOnline version included with the purchase is very nice.CONSDoes not cover the basics very wellDoes not contain comprehensive information about the nuts and bolts of AE in the way that the Trish and Chris Meyer books didNot a reference book, which it needed to beNot long enoughEmphasis on tutorials rather than constructing the "building blocks" of the basic knowledge you need to use AE as a tool.WAY too expensive for what it is.Overall, this isn't a bad book to have in your library... but I would seriously also buy Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, 5th Edition. Even though it doesn't have info on the most recent updates, it comprehensively covers the basics, and the new CiaB does not. For $56.50, the new book needs to offer more than it does.

I've used a few classroom in a book textbooks for my graphic design courses at Arizona State. This book is just terrible compared to the books for InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. This book is full of typos, small dark pictures, and unclear instruction. I would not suggest getting this if you're a complete newbie to After Effects. If you've managed to mess around with the program and have a good feel for it, I would suggest this book as a guide at best. However you would probably be better off saving your money and following along with a tutorial found on Google or Pinterest.

I don't think you ever work though a complete project. It's very disorganized and jumps around. Like the author was going "oh, let me show you this. oh let me show you that." You start a project then its confusing because the next section doesn't pick up where you left off, you just abandon it.

You can learn more from a five minute youtube video.Don’t waste your money.

I really wish I had taken the bad reviews to heart. It's extremely frustrating, what with the mistakes in the book combined with very tedious and complicated instruction. It became too much to tolerate, even for a patient person, by the fifth chapter and I have, for now, given up on this book.

i've paid tuitiion fe es for multiple college level graphic design courses that simply teach from these books. The adobe textbooks take the "long way" to explain everything, but its detailed. and it works. ... been very successful with other Adobe Suite Applications.

Kindle version: Lots of typos. Long captions unnecessarily describe everything in each screenshot. I wonder if a draft copy mistakenly made it into the Kindle distribution. Otherwise, the content seems fine - a good refresher/update for someone like me who has been away from AE for several years.

This was a great 101 introduction to After Effects. It's full of basic tutorials and some resource full tips for new updates and shortcuts included in the 2018 version. However, there were a few misprints and missing information in some tutorials that I had to google search and ask a pro about. However, if you want to begin the steps of learning after effects...this is the way to go.
