The new DK format has lost quality and readability. It now looks like a magazine layout, large meaningless photos, e.g. people sprawled on steps, people sprawled in a park that could be anywhere. The attempt to be arty or “contemporary” is at the expense of being coherent and useful And tne new almost unreadable type (tiny, grey-toned) makes it excruciating to read, even with reading glasses. I’ve given up on the book.

DK guides were always beautiful to hold and look through because of the glossy paper used; not so with this London 2019 Guide as they have moved to plain paper which takes away from the quality. Doesn’t come alive in the hand anymore, and unattractive to the eye.

I don't disagree with the criticisms so far (non-glossy paper; too many photos with no real "travel content"), but there's too much information for me to give it a 1 star.I have many DK books on various subjects and am a fan. This is the first time I've had one of their travel books and it falls short--short of other DK books and short of other travel guides. Being a travel guide, I couldn't expect it to be on the level with other DK books on a topic. This is only pocket-sized, with color photos reproduced on regular, non-glossy paper to keep the cost down. So, no, it doesn't have the gorgeous, informative appearance of "typical" DK books. I'm actually more disappointed, though, how it falls short of other travel books.It's not -that- bad in some ways. The maps, the breakdown of London by neighborhood and by things to see and do... the many photos--these create a feeling of adventure and excitement about London and a dsire to go and to explore. The bad part? That some sections seem kind of obvious. Reasons to go: "Sports"; "Theater"; "Parks", etc. These are all pretty vague and most are things that (in their lack of specificity) are shared with many modern cities. I like the bits on history. I like the breakdown on areas and what to do/see there. But there is scant restaurant/food information, even in the section for "foodies". None of those long lists of "Places to Eat" that most travel books haee, extensively, by area. None of that here.Same for places to stay. That is one of the big reasons I've deducted stars for it. Fodor's, Frommer's, they give places to stay, ranked and rated. It is very helpful. That's not the case here.And, finally, the typeface is so small. I'm going to stop giving anything higher than 3 stars to books without bigger font, especially as the layout has a lot of space for it. It's not tiny for space reasons but for style. And the style of little tiny font is a bad idea, particularly as most travelers skew older. This might be an interesting supplement to read along with Frommers or Fodors, but it would never be the only book you'dwant to bring, imo.

I was a travel agent for 23 years - in my late, lamented youth - and prepared many European trips for clients. I wish then that I had had a book like "DK Eyewitness London" to work with. These books, which come out yearly, are the best, most complete siteseeing guides produced today. They are mostly siteseeing because while they give a few suggestions for restaurants and hotels, the books' publishers realise that those things are covered by websites devoted to up-to-date info on dining and accommodations."DK Eyewitness London, 2019" is the latest in the London guide series. I think this year's book is a bit lighter than in previous editions. The front and back covers are thinner than before, and that makes a difference in carrying the book with you OR committing burn/slash on the book, cutting out the needed pages. That's what I was doing with the books when I travel.Now, as for the book itself. I go to London every two years so I'm fairly familiar with the city and it's sites. The DK Eyewitness books cover the sites in great detail. They highlight small, out of the way museums and historic sites. The book is so detailed that a high school or college history professor could use the book in teaching the history of London. By the way, the book is also available in Kindle.

I like the DK Eyewitness travel series, but I never take them with me on my trips, because they are too heavy. I use them for planning before my trip. Now the series has been updated and redesigned -- the paper is lighter weight and now I would consider taking these books along, although they are still a little heavier than the guidebooks that publish on newsprint-like lightweight paper. As for the content, that's unchanged. As it happens, I used the 2018 guide for a London trip last August and can compare that guide with this new one. I like it as much as I did before, there are still plenty of good ideas for places to visit, practical information such as transportation and current ticket prices, and lots of attractive photos (how did they manage to get all those pictures of cloudless bright days in London?) I especially liked that they mentioned more bookshops than most of the guides do, such as my current favorite, The London Review Bookshop in Bloomsbury. Plenty of neighborhood maps in color. Also a pull out map of central London with a Tube map on it, as well as a Tube Map on the inside cover of the books, so you have one either way. And now there's a digital edition of the whole guide , so you can bring it along without worrying about how heavy it is. Brilliant.

While is it time consuming to just "read" it (which I am doing while marking it up), it contains a lot of "meat" and the sentences are very well done.PROS:1) The sentences are mostly meaningful, short and concise (which I love), and you will see MANY other interesting words within the sentences. In this example, you will see "rollercoaster" and see that this example word (Komm) is an imperative (command).116- Komm – Come (Imperative)Lass uns mit der Achterbahn fahren. Komm schon!Let’s ride on the rollercoaster. Come on!2) Unlike many other foreign language word books, in this book you will see past participles like this one:747- Gesprochen – SpokenIch habe mit deinem Vater gesprochen. I have spoken to your father.3) Nouns are shown with their genderCONS:1) It is difficult to know which words are inside this book (and which are not) since they are NOT in alphabetic order. So, if you know some German verb you want an example of begins with "V," you have to look at 2000 words to find the one you want, and it may not even be in this book. It would be better to have a list - with clickable links - to EASILY take you to each of the 2000 words in the book. I suggest lists (in German and English) with letters A B C ... German learners need this book to go along with the other books that they are using to learn the German language.Other books may have a list of words most used but do not show them used in context.! The lay out is great. If you want to expand your vocabulary and learn how to use the words correctly , this book will help you. I wish it had 5000 words in it. Write out all of the examples and study them. Read the English translation first to see if you can write the German translation on your own.

This is great in that you have the most common words and their definitions but they are also used in a sentence with the english translation as well. Not the only thing you'll need but a useful tool in your arsenal.

Amazing list of the most used and need-to-know words in German. Not exactly light reading but a good reference to carry around, particularly on Kindle.

German is far more precise than English or other languages I've studied. I have found this very helpful and informative.

I really like this to learn knew words every day. It's helps me to see what words I already know and how much of the example sentences I can read already without help. I would recommend this.

I want to buy a copy of this book for every teacher I know. I teach elementary school and am constantly frustrated at how all behavior management, from the classroom to the school and district levels, boils down to reward and punishment. Obviously, that system doesn't work, because it's the same kids receiving said rewards and punishments day after day--if it worked, wouldn't the punished kids eventually learn?This book highlights exactly why they don't learn: because they need to be TAUGHT. I couldn't be rewarded or punished into becoming a good chess player, because no matter how many cookies or slaps on the wrist you gave me, I still don't know how to play chess! The same applies to kids who have emotional, behavior, or at-home issues that lie at the root of their frequent "misbehavior." Understanding that, and teaching problem-solving and special behaviors the same way we teach academic skills, is a much more worthwhile and effective way to address recurring behavior issues in students of all ages.

I bought this book halfway through a very difficult school year after my worst day teaching thus far. I work at a school that has some extremely challenging behaviors and nothing out school tried seemed to be working for our students with difficult behaviors. I had been hit and spit on by a child much larger and stronger than me because I was between him and a student he wanted to attack. I questioned why I was in the teaching profession and why this student was still in our school after many other acts of violence. When I got home that day I decided there MUST be another way and I started researching and found this book and THANK GOD I did!I started reading this book 2 days later and the stories at the beginning had me hooked immediately. I felt as if I was reading stories from within my own classroom. I immediately started a book study with some other teachers fro my school and within weeks we were able to start implementing ideas from this book within our own classrooms.Traditional discipline may work for some of our kids, but it is not working many of them. Rewards and punishments only make the problem worse for many students. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a new approach that works for and helps ALL students be their best instead of making them feel lost at school. This book looks at the unsolved problems rather than the behavior itself. This book encourages working as a team to solve problems the child is facing rather than dealing directly with or looking at only the difficult behavior.

I am an elementary and middle school counselor. I was looking for a good book to help with some of my most challenging students and was very pleased with this one. Just one sentence helped me to change the way I look at challenging kids: kids do well if they can. I have recommended it to many teachers I work with, and they have all loved it. Highly recommended for all school professionals.

I bought this after reading Dr Greene's The Explosive Child. His mantra that "Kids Do Well If They Can" really changed how I approached everything I was doing with my son, who has developmental delays in multiple areas. This book provides a lot of practical ideas for an education environment. As we finished my son's rough year in kindergarten, I could close my eyes and see my son easily becoming one of these kids who is lost and left-behind and comes out of school "worse for the wear." This book offers an understanding of how that happens, even when schools have the best intentions. My son is a sweet boy who has difficulty in a lot of areas that make school challenging (learning delays, speech delays, motor delays and all social/emotional delays that come in tow). The framework presented in this book, while probably more geared toward and audience of educators, was very refreshing to read. Every school is going to have their ways of doing things, but I now feel prepared with how to approach issues and ask questions to guide my son to the right kind of support for his behavior which will help him develop appropriately.

Hands-down the best book for educators! Every single teacher, administrator, and school staff member should read this book. It should be mandatory reading to work in a school. While waiting for background check results, pending school employees should all be required to read this in order to complete the hiring process.

Fact one: The story of Joseph is my favorite of the Old Testament.Fact two: R. Rushing's "Seal of the Sand Dweller" is a novelization of that story.Fact three: It was absolutely nothing like what I would have originally expected from such an endeavor.Fact four: It was infinitely better.This is a true epic, folks. Rushing begins her narrative not not with the coat of many colors or brotherly betrayal, but in the Egyptian court with Joseph (Yoseph) interpreting the king's dream. From here, a richly detailed and intricately woven story unfolds. It is familiar, yet surprising... formidable yet seductive.I was riveted.

I would like to know if the author is coming up with a sequel of this book because the story of Joseph (Yoseph) was taken to another level. It’s amazing how detailed this book was and how every was perfectly described. This is definitely one of the best books ever written, and I am hoping for volume 2 to come out soon! Amazing! Great book, will definitely not be disappointed.

This book was stunning. It's the story of Joseph in vibrant color, intricate detail, and waves of emotion. Rushing did an unbelievable amount of research to make this book authentic with the time period. The way she weaves all the characters together in one giant, gorgeous tapestry is so fitting of the time. The reader level is advanced due to the book having multiple points of view from which the story is told, so you need to read with your thinking cap on. But honestly, it is such a great story. I loved it and recommend it to all readers. Yes, even the ones who aren't really sold on biblical fiction. That was me and I'm a fan of this one. Looking forward to future books!

I love the way R. Rushing writes. Her descriptions are colorful and help place the reader right in the room with the characters. The author puts details in the familiar story that would never occur to to most readers and helped personify Joseph, his friends and enemies. I couldn't put the book down and read it in a 24 hour period! I can't wait for her next book! I wrote a descriptive list of the characters and their positions in the novel, and was surprised to find that same list at the end of the book. I would like to see that same descriptive list at the beginning of the book, or an indication of the location of the list of characters.

Rushing lovingly crafts a cast of characters as colorful and entertaining as the coat of many colors.

I really enjoyed this book because the author wrote great 'visuals' that kept me turning the page. There is a lot of adventure and scandal and I can't wait for what he/she has in the next book! LOVE it!!

Wonderful book!! There was enough detail to make the text rich and colorful, and enough action to make the story move at a good pace. I have been an avid reader my entire life, and I am very impressed by this author's writing! I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone! Just read it, you won't regret it!

PAUL HENDRICKSON is the author of the New York Times best seller and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost, and Sons of Mississippi: A Story of Race and Its Legacy, which won the 2003 National Book Critics Circle Award. Since 1998 he has been on the faculty of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Pennsylvania. For two decades before that, he was a staff writer at The Washington Post. Among his other books are Looking for the Light: The Hidden Life and Art of Marion Post Wolcott (1992 finalist for the NBCC award) and The Living and the Dead: Robert McNamara and Five Lives of a Lost War (1996 finalist for the National Book Award). He has been the recipient of writing fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lyndhurst Foundation, and the Alicia Patterson Foundation. In 2009 he was a joint visiting professor of documentary practice at Duke University and of American studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the father of two grown sons, both of whom work in media, and he lives with his wife, Cecilia, a retired nurse, in Washington, D.C., and outside Philadelphia.
