Most people associate the great conservationist John Muir with the Sierra Nevada and other mountains in California. However, from his early travels from Kentucky to Florida to this final book published in his lifetime, "Travels in Alaska," it's clear his interest extended far beyond California. He was particularly fascinated with southeast Alaska because he saw some of the same scouring in the mountains there as he had found in Yosemite, and he traveled through much of Alaska's Inside Passage to support his theory that one of the key shaping elements in Yosemite was the glaciers that had covered much of the future national park during the Ice Ages. In "Travels in Alaska," Muir's intense curiosity and keen observational skills as a self-taught naturalist equally impressed his Anglo-American companions and native Alaskans who were the guides in his explorations there. Muir's respect for the tribal members is strongly evident in the book and his interest in their family lives and culture comes through in his observations. He was especially impressed with the love parents had for their children, and how he never saw them speak harshly to them or strike them. Despite some descriptive excesses common to writing of his time that can seem slightly quaint to modern readers, Muir's reverence for the land and all its creatures stemming from his Christian faith and his humility before the Earth's sublime natural wonders won me over as they have every time I read his works. He withstood many hardships.....at least they would be hardships to us but Muir seemed to take all kinds of weather in stride and love it in a way that catches your breath! His descriptions are poetic. Not only is his writing beautiful, but one gets a sense that he is there in the wilderness with him. His way of speaking and vocabulary are different from modern day vernacular, but it gives a real life glimpse into the world of a great explorer and glaceologist! My visit to Alaska will be greatly enhanced after reading this book! I cant wait to leave next week!

The beauty of this wonderful reprinting is how it shows John Muir as a person, how it helps us to understand the dynamic and overwhelming beauty of Alaska, and the changes in the people of Alaska. Muir's complete, tireless, and joyful commitment to nature comes through on every page. The book unintentionally provides an excellent portrait of the kind of inexhaustible devotion it takes to change the world as did Muir. The book also provides a stunning portrait of Alaska in the latter part of the 19th Century and allows one to compare the Alaska of those days with Alaska of earlier times and of today. The biggest changes are in the glaciers and in the people. The glaciers have receded dramatically as a natural part of their centuries' long retreat. It is interesting to compare what Muir saw with the experience of Vancouver almost exactly 100 years earlier (ca. 1793). Vancouver could hardly enter Glacier Bay. Muir could enter quite some distance, but the glaciers were still the dominant features. Today, the glaciers have largely receded into deep valleys. Muir encountered people in Alaska living largely as they had for centuries. They were hunters and fishermen and lived in small groups along the shore line. As Jonathan Raban points out in the intricately woven fabric of his sublime book "Passage to Juneau," the people of southeast Alaska considered the sea to be the real environment of their lives while the land was considered dangerous and unknowable. They lived along the shore and knew how to live off and with the sea year round. The lives of the Alaskan people are very different today but greatly influenced by the past. Raban often characterizes Muir's writing as overblown and florid. However, it is a portrait of a man, a maritime land and a people. To do justice to those three, the book had to be what it is - an astonishingly colorful and detailed portrait in words.

Admission -- I own and have read the prior edition. While I can't go line by line over the differences, this book is substantially thicker (yes, I know that thickness is a profound yardstick to compare the two editions), which indicates that a great deal of work has gone into this book.I disagree with Garner on some issues (such as defining parties in briefs), I really love the overall guidance. Keep in mind, though, that this is guidance. If you routinely appear in certain courts, you would be well served to go to a CLE at which one or more of the court's judges is speaking and try to determine his or her preferences. For instance, while my local federal appeals court has highly qualified and hard-working law clerks, the court of appeals for the state has no law clerks, which shifts certain burdens to the lawyers (e.g., if your adversary misstates the holding of an opinion, you can't assume that the court will catch it). Also, you should know whether to slavishly follow the local rules (some judges either ignore them or have their own orders which impose other requirements). Garner should have included a section dealing with these practical points.While this book is really good for younger attorneys, even old dogs like me can learn new tricks.

This book is a must. Even though it has the hideous word "tips" in the title, the book is organized and clear. Every time you turn the page you'll find another gem that will improve your writing. Some tips are global and overarching. For example, Garner at once exposes and destroys unconscious assumptions of the reader. Other tips are on a practical level like how to simplify the heading-subheading scheme so the reader understands your progression of arguments. And still other tips sound like a life coach teaching self discipline methods like clarifying what you need to know before you write. Worth the price. Keep on the shelf for long time to come.

I love this book but I was unable to get through it all because there are sooooooooo many pages. So it wasn't as useful for me because I was on a tight deadline of 2 weeks for writing a Moot Court Brief to get on to the board.But what I did read I certainly did apply, and I wrote the Best Brief for Moot Court because of this book.

Glad I bought this book, I am a nonlawyer but I still need to upgrade my writing skills every chance I get. I highly recommend this book for those of you who like to write and enjoy technical reading. I appreciate talking with attorneys over legal issues, and this is the type of book that can assist a person if your doing pro se work, and need to express your point of view in a coherent and intellectual manner. Sometimes Court administrator/judges, etc examine documents and it makes their day go a lot smoother when they can read a document or brief and clearly get the message without a lot of redundant and time-wasting lines of thought.

As a young lawyer, this is maybe the best legal writing book I've ever read. The advice is simple to follow and easy to apply. I keep this handy whenever I'm writing a brief or have a question about how to tackle a brief-related issue.Is it a little pricey? Yes. But it's worth it.

Best book I've read on legal writing ever. The only caveat I would add is that it is not as useful in law school, because real world law practice is so different than law school. Law school trains you in a particular way that ironically needs to be deprogrammed once you enter law practice in order to be a good writer and effective advocate. This book deprograms you of legalese. But if you read it while still in law school where legalese has a purpose--the purpose of making you start thinking as a lawyer--it undermines a process you need while still a student.For instance, stating issues in the "whether" format seems to be commonly expected in law school, while it is bad practice in memos and appellate briefs. This book aims to reverse many of the bad habits one acquires in law school--the legalese that served a purpose before you became a lawyer but which handicaps you for the rest of your career if you don't get deprogrammed. This book deprograms and provides new programming that makes you a better writer and advocate.

I love this book, but I am very disappointed in the Kindle edition. So be warned.I wanted a Kindle version of this terrific book because I wanted my own copy (I have borrowed a colleague's hard copy), and with my Kindle and iPad, I would always have it handy. As a way to read the book, this is great and helpful. But as a REFERENCE tool, it is nearly useless. There is no comprehensive table of contents to help you refer to past chapters to brush up on a particular topic. And the subject index--which is included--doesn't work. For example, when I look up "Mr., Ms. Mrs.," it refers to chapter 55 (which is right). But the link takes you to page 55, which is in the middle of chapter 8 and far from where you need to be. This simply isn't useful unless you are reading it only straight through.

This is one of the best legal writing books I've read. I had a settlement proposal I was working on. I decided to see if this book could give me some last minute polishing ideas. In 90 minutes the tips helped me sharpen my ideas so well that my work went from average to rockstar. I had to re read my introduction ten times because I did not believe I wrote it

I have purchased a lot of travel guides and have done a lot of traveling in my life. However, this is one of the most disappointing, poorly written, travel guide I have ever used. First of all, the majority of the book is lodging and dining info, mainly expensive places with little info for the budget traveler. Most of this info could be found via the internet with greater accuracy, depth, variety, etc. That was about 2/3's of the book. For some some of the more important spots like Charleston, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Savannah there was little info about history, what to see and do, etc. And most of the info was old and inaccurate. I was able to get more info, using my iPhone. Take my advice, skip this piece of poop guide and use the internet. You will be much better off in the long run. Another piece of advice, skip Myrtle Beach, SC totally! It is nothing but a bunch of hotels, bad food places, cheap beach items and miniature golf courses.

Useless book but no big deal. It was so cheap. I will donate it to my local library. But the good news.. both North and South Carolina are beautiful states to visit. The Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC was fantastic. The azaleas were at their peak.

Few photos, few maps. Few photos and maps. Don't has one summary of the most important items. Don't has the most important museums.I do not recommend.

This is a poorly written travel guide with inadequate information and with graphics (or lack there off) which makes it difficult to use. There is basically no color in the entire book except the front and back covers. The Fodor's guide is of much better quality in its writing and graphics and a superior investment of your money and time. Also, when I purchase a travel guide, I am not purchasing a political magazine or book (I can get those elsewhere). The Frommer's guide is full of political statements which can be insulting and condescending and is definitely not for anyone who may consider themselves conservative or Republican (or as the Frommer guide calls them: "far right-wing racists"), but if you are a liberal ("progressive" good guys according to Frommer), this may be the guide for you. That is, if your "progressive" eyes have the patience to go through this book without falling asleep or getting lost what you are trying to find. If you have the misfortune like myself to purchase this book, rip out the nice map and keep it, while you throw away the rest of the book into the garbage can or better yet the recycling bin (yes, we "far right-wing" people do like recycling).

The book was ok. It just didn't make clear the massive building of condos and other buildings in places where we thought the coast was clear. Matbe our misread. The outer banks were the pits.

We ordered this item almost a month prior to our vacation departure date. It never arrived. What to do on vacation is useless if you are not on vacation!

Arrived in perfect condition; true to Frommer's form was just what I wanted.

Just a few pages were torn out at the end of the volume-not critical or so it seems to me
