From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—When her father dies as the result of suicide after the stock market crash of 1929, 12-year-old orphan Lizzie must find work even though she lacks any marketable talents. An invitation to travel alone to her wealthy uncle's logging camp in the Vancouver wilderness, where she will work for the summer as governess for his sons, provides a short-lived solution. When she arrives there, Lizzie finds that her uncle and his family have left and the camp boss, a vile and greedy alcoholic, has devised a plan to hold Lizzie for ransom. With the help of the loggers, Lizzie learns skills she never thought she could and becomes a part of their team. Descriptions of the camp and of the logging procedures are fascinating, though unfamiliar readers might experience some difficulty following along. While the premise is exciting and Lizzie is a brave and resourceful protagonist, the suspense level is relatively low; readers are not likely to truly fear for her safety. VERDICT Readers of historical fiction will appreciate this likable heroine, the interesting time period, and the unusual setting. A commendable secondary purchase.—MaryAnn Karre, Binghamton, NY

"The lyrical writing shines, and yet the danger that Lizzie faces―from nature and from men―is never far from the surface. Well-drawn characters and pitch-perfect writing elevate this adventure tale to soaring heights." ―Mariko Turk, Booklist"The High Climber of Dark Water Bay took me back to the best books of my youth--an old-fashioned (in the best possible way!) adventure tale for all the once-and-future Jo Marches out there! This is a smart and thoughtful book for younger teens. It takes the reader to an interesting place, a logging camp in British Columbia during the Great Depression. Through the eyes of an engaging and realistic girl, we learn about this interesting time and place in history. We are also inspired by the main character's pluck and resilience. It's a book that younger teens will embrace for the characters and story, and parents and teachers will embrace for the history and positive messages. The author treats her young readers seriously and thoughtfully; it's targeted to younger teens, but it's not fluffy.
Lizzie Parker is 12 years old. Her mother died when she was a baby and her father committed suicide after the 1929 Stock Market Crash. She's been living with her older sister and her family but they don't have much and through a series of happenings, Lizzie ends up at a remote logging camp in British Columbia. She has never had to work or do much for herself but finds herself learning new skills and self-confidence at the camp. This is a book for Young Adults. There is some colorful language in it so be forewarned for younger readers.I enjoyed Lizzie's story and actually wish the book had been longer.I received this book from Turner Publishing through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
Lizzie had a sheltered childhood with he beloved father; however, the Wall Street Crash in 1929 caused him to commit suicide. Lizzie goes to live with an older sister who is struggling to provide for her own family and sees Lizzie as another mouth to feed.Wanting to help, Lizzie jumps at the chance, to accept her uncle’s offer to be a governess to his children at a logging camp north of Vancouver, but when she arrives her uncle and his family are gone. Lizzie is now forced to make her way in a camp of rough men where the boss is not only ruthless but dishonest. Lizzie wants desperately to be accepted. She has one skill that is useful, climbing trees which she uses to gain respect from the loggers. This is a delightful historical novel that will appeal to young teenage girls. Boys might also enjoy the setting, a logging camp in the 1939’s but the girls would be most likely to identify with Lizzie. Young teens want to be accepted in the adult world. Lizzie is not exception. She feels lost until she is able to use her tree climbing skills to gain acceptance.I enjoyed the book. It’s well written and taps into the feeling of a young teen who has to use her wits to survive in a hostile environment.I received this book from Turner Publishing for this review.
Though this novel is targeted for younger readers, I still found it riveting as a grown-up reader (who happens to have an undergraduate and graduate degree in English Literature!). The author's prose is spare and perfect, giving just enough imagery and dialogue to vividly evoke the atmosphere of a 1930s British Columbian logging camp. The presence of a fabulous heroine (along with a memorable cast of secondary characters) plus a page-turning plot-line made it impossible for me to put this book down. In fact, I read it in two sittings and immediately desired a sequel upon finishing the last page. That is a sign of a GREAT read, and even more tellingly, a few weeks after reading this novel, I find myself returning in my mind to the world and predicaments of Lizzie Parker. On a whim, I gave it to my 14 year old son to see if this novel would appeal across gender and generation lines, and the verdict....he also loved it! Who would have thought that our best mother-son bonding this summer would be over a novel that we picked up at our local bookstore.
A likeable protagonist that you want to root for! Super cool setting in British Columbia! Great writing style! I thoroughly enjoyed this book as an adult, and I was pleased by the ending. I highly recommend it!- Emily
