This was the textbook required for my son's college class. His dad is a teacher at the tech college and they both tell me this a great textbook, just as described and very helpful. Me? I don't have a clue. Them? They know what they're talking about.

When I received them. I was excited to learn how to code. The problem was that every time I turn a page, it just felt like the book is about to break. After reading all the reviews about how their binding broke. I took action, I went to Staples and asked to get them spiral bind. They cost $6 each to add the spiral binding and I was impress with their results.

It is very good because it is easy to read and well organized. Some people would complain about a lot of images and empty spaces, but easy on the eyes for me and give you info in bites. The best way to use these books it to combine them with practical training (widely available online or on YouTube. Like SoloLearn and CodeAcademy). Read the relevant chapter in this book first, then practice it. Coding needs reading and practicing using various sources, because no single source gives you the whole story. It is a matter of accumulating bits and pieces of knowledge.

This set is fantastic! I’ve been teaching myself html, css and JavaScript and JQuery for the last month or so. I’ve been using these books along with a couple of other sources, and I’ve learned so much! (Still have a long way to go though, of course.) Overall, I’ve found these books to cover the basics and then I move on to other sources to learn in a more in-depth fashion. These books are set up in a way that shows you the basics, but then serve as a great reference to go back to after you’ve learned enough to write code more proficiently on your own. They are also beautifully laid out and present the information in a simple fashion, making the concepts bite-sized and easy to learn. I have not had any issues with the binding, but I also have been more careful about not stretching the binding past 180 degrees when opening the books, because of the cautionary reviews I’ve read on here.

These two books are beautiful with their illustrations and such, but the pace at which they move is incredibly slow. As someone who has programming in other computer languages (C#, C++, C, Java) and other markup languages (XAML), I found it a bit irritating at time how the pacing of the book was. On that note, I wish some of the stock photography illustrations in the book were replaced with additional examples as the examples that were in the books were helpful. Nevertheless, the books are generally helpful, especially when laying out the format of functions and indicating what goes where. However, if you have programming experience elsewhere, consider another book.

This is likely a premature review, but I have just finished the HTML and CSS book. This review will be revised as necessary once I finish this set, but I have to say: what an amazing read. I have previous experience programming in R and Python, and found the exposition to be very coherent and very clear. About 10 hours through reading this book, I could actually read and understand most HTML code on a webpage. I have experience here and there having to write simple HTML pages on the fly, but it's nice to finally -understand- what the code is doing and have a good idea on how to structure a web page. Highly recommended for people who need to learn HTML quickly and don't have time to Google absolutely everything! The CSS section is just as great, but it will take longer than 10 hours to go through. Very nice and easily reproducible examples (except in the cases where he uses a downloaded image, but I don't mind that much). This book could use some updating, however, with respect to HTML5 and CSS3.

has been deprecated, for example. I look forward to seeing an update released.

Decent learning tool so far. More of a refresher really. I'm going through the HTML book just to brush up but it's the JavaScript and jQuery that I need to learn. I took some other reviewers advice and immediately had it spiral bound at Office Depot. Which turned out great! The reason I give it 3 stars is because it really needs to be revised and updated for HTML5. Many of the examples include older code (which the author distinguishes as such) and also include CSS style in the HTML code. Which in my opinion is a big waste of time. The author should explain structure and keep CSS styling completely separate as that's pretty much how it's done everywhere now. The book is copyrighted 2011. Which is pretty ancient in the programming world. I'm sure I will more than get my money's worth out of this book set, I'm just a little disappointed in how outdated it is.

I truly adore these books. I got the set less than a week ago and I haven't been able to put the HTML/CSS one down. These books not only have great information but the author writes them in as little as text as possible, no extra fluff. The design actually makes them ENJOYABLE to read. The examples are clear and simple and I can see myself referring to these in the future as I practice more. You don't need any HTML/CSS experience to pick these up. I used the first book as a refresher course and am excited to jump into the JavaScript/JQuery. Would definitely recommend and very happy with the quality and price.Binding issues were mentioned in previous reviews. I did not have this issue with my books so it may been fixed with the manufacturer?

"[a] searing expose." -People Magazine"the most complete picture of Scientology so far." –Garry Wills, New York Times Book Review"compelling, rich and courageous...what comes through this prodigious reporting effort is a really good read about the birth of a strange and yet all-American institution...INSIDE SCIENTOLOGY is an impressive high-wire act producing a scrupulous history of how one man reframed the universe and how a lot of people paid for the privilege of agreeing with him." - Oregonian"Inside Scientology is a masterful piece of reporting....a compelling introduction to "America’s most secretive religion," as the subtitle has it. Even for those who have no interest in parsing when cults become religions or why faith upends fact, Reitman tells a spellbinding story of a larger-than-life personality whose quirks, ticks and charisma shaped America’s newest homegrown religious movement." - Washington Post"this book is fearless" - Wall Street Journal"[a] meaty, engaging new book" -Slate.com"In a new book, Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secret Religion, author Janet Reitman tell the fascinating history of the mysterious organization and its members." - Time.com"[a] meticulously researched history and revealing exposé, a frightening portrait of a religion that many find not just controversial, but dangerous…Throughout the book, the author displays consummate journalistic skills. Her accumulation of evidence is particularly impressive and gives rise to one of the more memorable works of investigative nonfiction in recent years."- Boston Globe"a well-researched and compelling read" - Los Angeles Times"[a] richly narrative history of the organization… The book is convincing and compelling. It will be interesting to see how the Scientology leadership responds." - St Louis Post Dispatch"Inside Scientology leaves no scandal unturned in the life of L. Ron Hubbard, underlings, celebrities and cult "slaves" in this story of America's most secretive religion....It is a riveting read not only for its thorough research, and winning style, but because [Reitman] has left no greed undescribed in the 396 page-turner." - Seattle Post Intelligencer"So most journalistic accounts of Scientology fall into two categories: ax-grinding expose or fawning apologism. Fortunately Janet Reitman finds a third way in her authoritative, absorbing "Inside Scientology": nuanced reporting that lets the facts speak for themselves..."Inside Scientology" will remain a thoughtful, fair-minded record of its tumultuous first generation." - San Francisco Chronicle"a serious, painstaking investigation of the organization's unique structure and bare-knucled business acumen." - GQ"Reitman's book delivers all it promises, and it promises a lot… [Reitman] has put together the most masterfully written, narratively rewarding, and thorough yarn about L. Ron Hubbard, David Miscavige, and Scientology and its strange past, present, and possible future….In Inside Scientology, we have a thorough, brave journalist backed by a major publisher, and soon what no doubt will be a major publicity push: Reitman's book should soon become Scientology's biggest headache in years." - Village Voice"[a] meticulously compiled exposé, culled from hundreds of interviews with active Scientologists and defectors alike. [Reitman's] revelations — including abuse allegations against church leader David Miscavige and details about the organization's aggressive courtship of Tom Cruise — come with impressive backup." - Entertainment Weekly"Inside Scientology is an engrossing, groundbreaking work that brings a welcome sense of fair-mindedness to a subject that is, for many journalists and scholars, too hot to touch. Reitman has accomplished the miracle of adding light without heat." —Lawrence Wright, author of The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11"Inside Scientology goes beyond the celebrities and the scandals—though they're here in all their absurdity and horror—to find in Scientology a more profound story about "technology" as an article of faith and faith as a vessel for science, or, at least, science fiction. With precision and empathy, Janet Reitman has in this definitive investigation laid bare the genesis and possibly the endgame of America's strangest religion." —Jeff Sharlet, author of The Family and C Street

From the Inside Flap

Scientology is known for its celebrity believers and its team of "volunteer ministers" at disaster sites such as the World Trade Center; its notably aggressive response to criticism or its attacks on psychiatry; its requirement that believers pay as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars to reach the highest levels of salvation. But for all its notoriety, Scientology has remained America's least understood new religion, even as it has been one of its most successful. Now Janet Reitman tells its riveting full story in the first objective modern history of Scientology, at last revealing the astonishing truth about life within the controversial religion for its members and ex-members. We watch the singular L. Ron Hubbard transform a self-help group into a worldwide spiritual corporation, at one point running the church from his personal fleet on the high seas before establishing its base in sleepy Clearwater, Florida. As he became increasingly paranoid and reclusive a young acolyte named David Miscavige assumed control; after Hubbard's death in 1986 he quickly purged the ranks and began to transform the church once again. Miscavige has overseen some of the church's greatest triumphs--among them a controversial billion-dollar IRS tax exemption and Tom Cruise's emergence as a vocal advocate--but he also has created a climate of fear and intimidation, according to ex-members whose stories of abuse Reitman shares. Reitman is the first to examine his twenty-five year reign and what it might mean for the future of the church. Based on five years of research, confidential documents, and extensive interviews with current and former Scientologists, this is an utterly compelling work of nonfiction and the defining work on an elusive faith.

Like many, I was shocked to hear rumors, allegations and accusations of a "religion" in our midst that had all the same trappings and pathology of a regime defined by totalitarian mind control and draconian distain for basic human rights as a modern day Communist North Korea. I just kept thinking, this can't possibly happen in the freest country in the world. So I set out to learn the truth for myself (as I always do). What I learned was as mind blowing as it was soul crushing. As I looked through the offerings, it became clear that many of the books written were authored by former scientologists, which immediately begs the question of their impartiality; conscious or unconscious.Unlike those others, Reitman is a journalist, first and foremost. This fact comes through quite clearly in her writing and in her perspective - which- for the most part - comes off as even-handed and factually fair. That conclusion is based on my review of hundreds of articles and several other books on Scientology (including Dianetics). The stories she tells of LRH's misuse, abuse, and demagogic totalitarian control of his parishioners, reads like pages ripped from the biography of every charismatic leader who ever conjured a cult following, from Jim Jones an Sun Myung Moon, to Kim Jil Un and Hitler. Her captivating account of the unlikely evolution of an obscure but prolific pulp sci-fi writer to a God-like entity worshiped world-wide is truly a tale stranger than fiction. She gives us not only a peek behind the curtain of the great and powerful OZ (LRH) [and his unbequeath heir, usurper to the thrown, David Miscavige], but, instead, she throws back the church's secretive shroud, laying bare the destructive disfunction of an organization that preys upon the generous hearted, well intentioned, if naive, hopes and dreams of innocents who sought only to improve themselves and the world around them. All betrayed by a snake oil charlatan bent purely on his own self-enrichment and aggrandizement. It's a fascinating cautionary tale of how easily average (and even well-above average) people can be drawn into a belief system that not only controls their every thought and action but which forms a fortress of faith around them from which there is no escape. The chapter on Tom Cruise and his relationship with the self-described "pope of Scientology" is every bit as intriguing as the plots from the "Fox Catcher" and "Spartacus", revealing Miscavige as the over-compensating, deeply insecure, petty tyrant who revels in the humiliation and suffering of his "fellow family members" like all domestic violence perpetrators. But it also explains why, like most domestic violence victims, it is so difficult to leave. If like me, you want to learn "THE REAL TRUTH" about the "Church" of Scientology, start with this book. But don't STOP with this book. Read other books and articles as I have, including COS's materials and "reprogramming" books on what differentiates a "religion" and a "cult". Only then can you arrive at YOUR personal truth on the subject. (hint: as Pulitzer Prize Winning journalist Bob Woodward said in the midst of the Watergate scandal "Follow the Money.") Most importantly, keep an open mind, but think for yourself.

Reitman has produced a very well researched investigation which is balanced and quite factual. Unlike much writing focused on religion (although Scientology hardly qualifies) Reitman doesn't seem to have any other agenda but the truth. I purchased the book with the purpose of discovering exactly what Scientology was all about. I had no knowledge of them except that I remember them hounding my father when I was a child - he made the mistake of talking to some of them. Inside Scientology provided a very useful history and expose of the movement and its founder. Starting with L. Ron Hubbard (a mercenary charlatan at best) Reitman traces the development of the 'church' from Dianetics to the global organisation that it is today. With input from current and past members she is able to piece together some of the mysteries of this dark organisation. Some of the events that she uncovers are chilling, some merely absurd. If you want a balanced, open look at Scientology this is the book. Definitely recommended.

Ok, I am not a verified purchaser of the audio version, but I wish I was. I borrowed the CD set from the library and was very impressed by Ms Reitman's level of detail. Having previously purchased the Kindle edition, this was my second read. This is a great car program for those commuters among us. Buy it!I enjoy reading many investigative works about Scientology, as it seems amazing that it continues to exist after victimizing so many people and families while hiding behind a shell of religion.Ms. Reitman obviously did a tremendous amount of research and had great access. I found it very interesting that most recently Scientology likely made more money off of real estate holdings than from new members. In may ways it is like a pyramid scheme, success dependent on bringing in new members who gan be encouraged (demanded) to give their life savings. Sad for them and for their families.I would like to see a future specific investigative work directed toward David Miscavige, and a concentrated effort to have the IRS reevaluate the tax exemption of this organization. I don't like the fact that we are all supporting this via tax deductions. I commend Ms. Reitman for writing Inside Scientology. I would also like to hear of any attempts by the organization to harass her now for doing so, and how we can fight back against this cult to avoid creation further victims. I encourage everyone to read the extensive information on web sites such as Operation Clambake, Truthaboutscientology.org, and others.

Ms. Reitman has written a thorough, well researched book on Scientology. She has references for everything in the book. After reading, and learning about the L. Ron Hubbard answer to psychiatry, I found myself comparing this to Mormonism and Hubbard to Joseph Smith. I have also read a fascinating book on Mormonism by Jon Krakauer, Under the Banner of Heaven. I highly recommend it as well. What is unusual regarding Scientology revealed by Inside Scientology is that it seems like Scientology isn't a theology. It is more like a psychiatric approach to well being. Scientologists do not worship The Lord, they pay for auditing sessions where they talk about the mind, and weird sci-fi stuff like "the thetans."If you want to discover what Travolta and Cruise consider religion, read Janet Reitman's Inside Scientology. I think that if Travolta and Cruise read it they might exit the clown car they are passengers on.

I'm a full-time Oracle DBA. I bought the book because I wanted to spend a weekend getting acquainted with the product, as I will need to be supporting it in the future. The weekend is over now, and I feel like I have a good understanding of the product's overall capabilities. I was also able to get a simple test replication environment up and running, but of course I still have a lot to test. The authors are definitely GoldenGate experts, and it shows. The tips and tricks chapter, and advice given throughout the book, gave me the impression that they really want the reader to succeed with GoldenGate. Contrary to what another reviewer said, it didn't seem like a reproduction of the documentation at all. What keeps the book from being 5 star level are a few minor issues throughout the book. I saw no mention of enabling FORCELOGGING in the Oracle DB in the installation chapter. My Replicat didn't start initially because there was no mention of adding a default checkpoint method to globals.prm (although this could have just been because I was using a newer release than the one used at the time of writing). There were a few other issues as well. But, like I say, these are minor issues. Someone working on setting up GoldenGate probably already has enough experience to know how to troubleshoot simple problems that may come up when you're new to something. With a few tweaks, I am sure that the second edition of the book will be 5 star. Overall I'm happy with the purchase. Well done, authors.

I'm not sure of the meaning of this book's title: Expert ...If this means the book was written by experts, that most likely is true. But, if this means the book is for experts or the book will make you an expert, that is definitely false. If you never worked with GoldenGate and need a quick overview of the product, then buy this book because it will give you a very good introduction to the functionality and usage of GoldenGate. Otherwise the book is not for you. Just One example: the troubleshooting section covers very little. Anyone who worked with GoldenGate and had to troubleshoot it definitely had to use logdump, this book doesn't even touch on the basics of navigating the trails with logdump. Similar comments, i.e. very brief and not in-depth, could be made about some other important sections.

GoldenGate is a great product. This book gives you an introduction to GoldenGate (GG).The strengths of GG are fast replication to heterogeneous databases, (single or multiple target database(s , bi-directional replication and performance. This book gives brief introduction to most of the areas, thus can be used for getting an introduction to GoldenGate. Since not many books are available in this topic, this is a great book in that respect. Some of the important areas that are lacking in this book are :1) Details on bi-directional replication, (this book have 1-2 pages on this area) a Was expecting more coverage on conflict identification b) Conflict resolution (with examples for various CRUD) c) Macro programming d) Invocation of stored procedure for conflict identification and resolution2) External module invocation3) Not enough examples on most of the areas4) Discussion about types of conflicts that can occur in a multi-master replication and related examples5) Best practice6) Performance tips and tricksIf you are looking for fundamentals of GoldenGate, the authors have done justice and the book is well written.

Richard Chung has got a great expertise on Golden Gate, I have still not read the book but I know some of the folks who work under him and they have appreciated this book like anything.I myself have worked under Richard for 2 years and he is awesome in this technology, I have been reading some text from net but looking forward to get more solid knowledge about this tool.Oracle Golden Gate is the future of Live Business Intelligence Reporting.Regards,Siddharth gupta

Few days back i bought this book to learn GG, satisfied with the way that the authors been presented the content in this book and i feel it is the best book that i available in the market.

I was recently provided a copy of Expert Oracle Goldengate for review. The Title Written by Ben Prusinski . Ace Director. Steve Phillips and Richard Chung. The Book starts with a very well written introduction discussing replication technologies , Their Application and their evolution from Oracle Basic replication to Oracle Streams. This is a very good refresher for people who want to get into replication technologies to understand and seethe different options available in Oracle . I did feel that the authors could have added more to the introduction section but seeing that it was just an intro chapter the length was ok.Chapter 2 deals with mostly how to download and install the software. The problem with such chapters is that they get dated pretty quickly not only becuase Oracle likes to switch their OTN links on people. The Software updates can cause the chapter to become obsolete fairly quickly but never the less it provided detailed screenshots on the download as well as example configurations and complete installation steps for various platforms.Chapter 3 is where you start getting absolute value from this book. This Chapter is very well written and goes into a lot of details on how the golden gate architecture . The Authors have tried their best to explain the architecture in excruciating detail. The Other chapters that makes this book a must have for any goldengate administrator or user include The Chapter on Tuning, Disaster Recovery options and Zero Downtime migration replication.I'm Planning on keeping this book as a reference on my book Shelf and would recommend this book to anyone using Goldengate.

The Girl in the Red Coat: A Memoir, by Roma Ligocka

From Publishers Weekly

As a young child, in the Krakow ghetto, Ligocka was known to everyone by the strawberry-red coat she always wore-an image that Steven Spielberg would use in Schindler's List, without knowing anything about Ligocka herself. Determined to tell her own story, Ligocka gives a harrowing, impressionistic account of her early memories of the ghetto: the men in shiny black boots with snarling dogs, the endless waiting in lines, people shot indiscriminately and her grandmother's seizure by SS officers while Ligocka hides under a table. Ligocka and her mother sneak out of the ghetto and are taken in by a Polish family; her father, taken to Auschwitz, escapes several years later. In a poignant episode, the little girl doesn't recognize this haggard specter who wants to embrace her. The memoir also describes Ligocka's youth in Communist Krakow: her career as an actress in theater and films, her struggle as an adult to confront her frightful memories and the weathering of new crises, from the passing of her parents to political turmoil in Poland. Though Ligocka's rendering of her early childhood voice isn't quite seamless (it sometimes sounds forced and too knowing), this doesn't take away from the power of her narrative, and readers may be particularly interested in her experiences as one of a tiny handful of Jewish survivors in Communist Poland. 30 b&w photos.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Seeing herself as the "girl in the red coat" in the film Schindler's List inspired the author to undertake this painful journey into her past. In a fascinating work that reads like a novel, Ligocka, an acclaimed artist, set and costume designer, and cousin of Roman Polanski, confronts her memories as a young Polish Jew during World War II. Although Ligocka only spends about one-third of the book on her traumatic experiences "hiding in the open" between the ages of three and seven, her experiences obviously affected her entire life, leading to depression, addiction, and an existence of constant fear. As in Julia Collins's memoir, My Father's War, Ligocka's work is a testament to both the frailty and the strength of very young children who have experienced trauma. The remaining two-thirds of this work chronicle Ligocka's life as a career woman, wife, and mother and her struggle to come to terms with her past in the artistic culture of postwar Europe. This work, already a best seller abroad, should be purchased for both public and academic libraries. Maria C. Bagshaw, Lake Erie Coll., Painesville, OHCopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Roma's story shot straight to my heart and reminded me once more that after seeing Schindler's List, I walked to my car, climbed in and sobbed uncontrollably. No film before or since has shaken me to my core like it did. Too brazenly and too realistically, like this story, it revealed the awful horrors of that time. Roma's brave memoir remembers it, first-hand, and reminds us once more that Man must Never Forget. I thank her for putting her pain in words and telling her point of view. Mostly, I want to apologize for the fear and pain she and her family suffered, as I'm sure not many said they were sorry back then. She is a Survivor. And was saved so that her story could have a voice. I thank her for sharing it with us.

I read this book right after it was published and as the grandchild of those who escaped The Holocaust, I can relate to the psychological damage Ms. Ligocka refers to many times in her memoir. This is one of the most interesting and heart wrenching books I have ever read. I suggest it to anyone who comes from similar roots and also to anyone who wants to know about the psychology of WWII history. Beautifully written and straight from the heart.

after watching and reading about the making of Schindler's list, this book had special meaning. I wonder how many people realize there really was a girl in the Warsaw ghetto during WWII who wore a red coat. Thank you.

Such a well crafted memoir. A telling of the Holocaust from a Polish child's perspective, the horror of which was compounded by Communist take over.

Fantastic book...

Great book

I got this book from the library after reading another Holocaust survivor story. It is so real and heartbreaking, but even in its honesty it brings a nostalgia for home and family and an understanding of what people go through to protect and love each other.I bought it here for my mother, who was born here in Tennessee the same year the Girl in the Red Coat was born in Germany. She will really love it.
