Wealth of Wisdom has some of the leading advisors, academics, inheritors, entrepreneurs, and authors giving invaluable advice. I like how the authors frame the key issues for families offices. It helps me as an advisor and Venture Capitalist better address the concerns of my existing Family Office clients as well as potential limited partners by putting topics in context and framing them in a manner that is meaningful to their needs and expectations.

This is an unprecedented resource for families of wealth, and the advisors who support them. As the authors note in their introduction, finding answers to the 50 questions in this book has been an impossible task … until now.Rather than try to answer these key questions themselves, McCollough and Whitaker have put together the leading thinkers, advisors, academics, inheritors, entrepreneurs, authors and speakers to give sage advice. Families can find answers to questions like: “How Do You Start a Family Conversation About Prenuptial Arrangements?; How Should You Understand and Deal with Investment Risk?; How Much Money Should You Leave Your Children, and When?; How Can You Best Manage Conflict in Your Family?”.One of the things I especially like about the book is the different voices you hear throughout. Some contributors use examples from fictional families to bring their chapters to life, others provide academic definitions of essential terms; there’s even an excerpt from a memorable speech by Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF.Reading through this accessible yet meaty book, I felt what I’m sure will become a collective sigh of relief. Finally families and their advisors can find answers to the most pressing questions, all in one place.

While the title may give the impression that this is a book only for the wealthy, the reality is that all readers will benefit from it's content. Structured in a way where each chapter begins with a common question related to families and their finances, addressed by individual experts on the subject, the book can serve as much as an encyclopedia of issues to the reader rather than something that needs to be read front to back (although doing so is well worth the time for anyone aspiring to build and protect their wealth through the litany of issues that can arise).Through studying common issues families have faced in the past, and harnessing the knowledge of dozens of experts in the field, Wealth of Wisdom is an excellent guide for someone looking to build, protect, and transcend their wealth across multiple generations.

I love this book. Wealth is a tricky subject and family dynamics are even trickier. When you combine both, it’s often problematic. But it needn’t be. This book has all the questions you wanted to ask but were probably too self-conscious to do so. I love that it starts with a chapter that helps you think about what matters most, beyond money and investment goals. Wealth is too often the primary focus, rather than people and the lives they want to live. The authors deliberately go deep into some very philosophical areas, but the advice remains practical. The diversity of thought adds to the richness on offer. Definitely passing this one on to family and colleagues.

This book covers a lot of subjects in the realm of wealth, in an insightful manner on each different subject. As an example, on the investing section, in Chapter 13 we find a useful breakdown of an investor’s objectives and how this should help the construction of an adequate portfolio, together with a simple framework to evaluate if the appropriate level of risk has been taken. Also, in Chapter 14 focuses on the important question of how to correctly estimate the expected return of the portfolio, avoiding the common mistake of extrapolating the past and taking into consideration the prevailing market valuation vis-a-vis its own history.

Wealth of Wisdom is sure to be a useful and helpful resource to advisors and families. The editors have done an excellent job at selecting and stating questions that reflect issues of great concern to families of wealth, and at grouping and presenting such questions in a thoughtful and meaningful order. The assembly of these important questions and the thoughtful analyses of leading advisors into one volume creates a valuable and organized resource for those who deal with the challenging task of advising individuals and families alike regarding the multi-generational devolution of wealth in its broadest sense.

Preserving and growing wealth through the generations is an oft under-estimated challenge. McCullough and Whitaker have assembled some of the best thought leaders to produce a perfect blend of time tested truisms and latest wealth management advances, such as liability driven investing. This book addresses the many dimensions of challenges, including family dynamics, portfolio management, and how to find an advisor to help in the process.Well done!

Review

"Infectious good reading. The prose is limpid, the chapters are luminous."—James Moore, co-author of Darwin “The history of evolutionary science from the 18th-century to the present is a history of controversies and seemingly incompatible views. It takes an author like Ed Larson to provide an account of this crucial history. . . .The reader will be rewarded by an intellectual delight.”—Ernst Mayr"Larson masterfully takes us from the 18th century French enlightenment to the 21st century evolution wars. From Buffon and Cuvier, through Darwin and Wallace, to Dawkins, Gould, and Wilson, he provides a scholarly, readable history of the ups and downs of the theory of evolution. Larson shows us how firmly this theory is established, as firmly as Einstein's theory of relativity."—Duncan M. Porter, Director of the Darwin Correspondence Project"Larson has written a brilliant introduction to the history of evolution, equally sensitive to scientific, religious, and social factors. It is, hands down, the most readable and reliable account available."—Ronald L. Numbers, Hilldale and William Coleman Professor of the History of Science and Medicine. Department of Medical History and Bioethics, University of Wisconsin "Ed Larson is both a historian and a writer who knows how to bring his subject alive. In Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory he combines the latest historical scholarship with an understanding of recent issues in science, religion and social debate. This powerful book will help everyone understand the foundations of modern evolutionary ideas and the origins of the latest controversies." —Peter J. Bowler, Queens University Belfast"An indispensable guide to the sometimes weird, but always wonderful, world of Evolution. Every species inhabiting this contested territory is here: Darwinian materialists, Lamarckian progressivists, hopeful-monster mutationists, theistic evolutionists, neo-vitalists, six-day creationists, mathematical geneticists, intelligent designers, molecular reductionists and on and on. Yet this is no monochrome chronicle of disengaged scientific ideas. It is a rich and compelling narrative portrayed in glorious technicolour, as grand and sweeping in scope as the theory of evolution itself. In the struggle for shelf-life among publications on evolution, Edward Larson?s book is superbly fitted for long-term survival."—David N. Livingstone, author of Darwin's Forgotten Defenders: The Encounter Between Evangelical Theology and Evolutionary Thought“Larson’s acclaimed gifts as a writer who can make the history of science exciting to a wide audience are visible again. The story, which takes seriously the cultural meanings of new science, has many twists and turns and is told with humor and vivacity.”—JOHN HEDLEY BROOKE, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion, University of Oxford

This is an intellectual history of thought on evolution in Europe and the United States. It is logically sequenced and accessible to the non-biologist reader. I plan to read it again sometime because I personally have trouble wrapping my mind around the many variations of evolutionary thought; I feel I will gain from the re-read by picking up new things in it and by making connections so far unmade. I thoroughly believe in evolution and consider it an obligation to defend evolution as science as opposed to superstition or fake science-- but I would like to be able to defend it in depth and with greater certainty in my assertions. This book has helped.

This book was very well done. The author has a nice style that was clear and engaging. It put the history of the evolutionary theory in perspective over time and how it has changed from the beginning. It wasn't overly technical but the author had enough knowledge to explain how technology and society has influenced the theory. I learned some things I didn't know previously about people and ideas relative to evolution. The section about eugenics gave me a little better understanding of the Nazi regime. I wished there was a little more about the current genetic research but it is changing so fast that it is hard to keep up with and incorporate in a book format.

Book covers the theory of Evolution from pre Darwin through and up to today including an in-depth discussion of human and social evolution. I find this an excellent overall look at the theory and all of its ramifications and interpretations throughout history.

Mr. Larson has written a fine overview of the history of evolution. The book does not dwell endlessly on every skirmish between different scientists or the backlash from religious groups. If Mr. Larson had taken that approach, the size of "Evolution" would have made "War & Peace" look like a flimsy bookmark. Instead, the author effectively shows how and why Darwin's theory became and continues to be the backbone of all biological research. It is absolutely amazing that we are into the 21st century and, still, a large portion of the populace doesn't understand or accept evolution. This book is a great, entertaining start for people who believe knowledge is power and have the courage to take their brains out for a little fresh air.If you are looking for a more detailed account of some of the topics skimmed over in this work, I'd humbly suggest Mr. Larson's "Summer for the Gods" about the Scopes Monkey Trial; "Monkey Girl" by Edward Humes which is about ignoramuses trying to sneak creationsim into Dover, Pennsylvania's high school science curricula; and "War Against the Weak" by Edwin Black that documents America's frightening, misguided flirtation with eugenics. All three of them are also excellent reads.

The book is a good analysis of the development of the theory of evolution itself, showing the reasonableness of ideas that didn't pan out and are no longer discussed. There is also much discussion of the personal views, including religious ones, of many of the scientists involved. A nice philosophy of science text in this way. The author is a little smug in the beginning, but this fades away and is easy to just ignore in any case.

I thought this book was interesting, but a bit slow. It worked very well for class, though, and it came in great condition.

I have remarked elsewhere (somewhat controversially) that relatively few people, even biological scientists, really understand the Principle of Evolution. You will not become one of those few by reading this book. But what you will learn will be, to use the author's words, "remarkable." I have been a biologist for 30 years now and I learned something new from each page, not about biology but history, just as the subtitle says. The author, Edward Larson is a professor in the School of Law at Pepperdine University. He has a Ph. D. in History from the University of Wisconsin and a J.D. from Harvard. He has several other works on the interaction between science and religion and works on various aspects of the legal history of the United States. His authority on this subject is well established. The book starts in France, in the midst of the enlightenment, with the story of the man who managed to squash any real discussion of evolution throughout his lifetime and for 30 years after, Georges Couvier, the granddaddy of modern comparative anatomy. He argued against any form of gradual speciation on the grounds that the organ systems of each species were too essentially integrated to allow for any variation. Variation would lead to death, which happens to be right most of the time, and the essence of Couvier's argument remains at the heart of the objections of the advocates of Intelligent Design yet today. Couvier spent his career making sure that Lamarck's "ascending escalator" of species never got off the ground and the story of these two men and the changing ideas of the early 19th century is worth the price of the book. But the origins of evolution are more to be found in fossils than finches, so the book turns to the work of Charles Lyell and the other rock choppers of England who founded simultaneously the sciences of geology and paleontology. It was Lyell's book, "Principles of Geology" that Darwin read and reread on that five year journey of the Beagle. It was Lyell that allowed Darwin to see back through the time available and necessary for evolution. Lyell's work was the bedrock on which Darwin eventually constructed his theory using the bricks and mortar supplied by Thomas Malthus. Darwin took his time with this construction and it's unveiling and this makes for a good story.Professor Larson then describes the fanatical proselytizing for the ideas of evolution by "Darwin's Bulldog", Thomas Huxley, and Darwin's cousin, Francis Galton, the founder of Social Darwinism. One of the weakest points of the book is the author's failure to explore adequately the fact that the fervor of these men was every bit the equivalent of that of those similarly well-meaning folk who opposed the teaching of evolution insisting on Heavenly mechanisms 60 years later. The acceptance of both God and science by Darwin's American ally, Asa Gray, likewise remains unexplored. Huxley and Galton embraced the science so they might free themselves from religion, but that embrace is then how science becomes a religion, as it has for many people. That religion of science can lead to the same irrationality sometimes found in other religions. Social Darwinism has killed far more people than the Crusades. The book also struggles in places as it progresses through the 20th century, but then the science does start to get trickier here. The treatment of Mendel (his work was not discovered until the 20th century so it is dealt with here) is appropriately generous and that of Jay Gould appropriately harsh. The appeal here is the description of the scientists who followed Darwin to found modern genetics (lot of founding going on around this, hmmm), their lives and their interactions with each other which slowly lead to the synthesis of genetics and natural selection that we now call evolution. The book regains its stride in its discussion of the rejection of evolution by many in the United States in the 20th century and of the Scopes Monkey Trial. But it should, Professor Larson has written another book on just that subject, "Summer for the Gods", the book that evidently lead him down this historical path. The movie "Inherit the Wind" is a lie and Professor Larson says so. But while the treatment of the deniers of evolution is fair, accurate and measured, the undertone of scorn is unmistakable. For those who do want to know the science before they read this book, the starting point is easy - Darwin. Origin of the Species is easily the best non-fiction book of the 19th century and the corner stone of modern biology. For those who really want to try to understand the science, I recommend Douglas Futuyma's text, "Evolution." For those who just want to know the "remarkable history of a scientific theory" this is your place.

A good book, valuable and interesting. Mostly for beginners in the field of history of science.

From the Author

This is my first book and one of my greatest accomplishments. It's not easy for a girl who makes video to write a book. But it meant a lot to me to give you something you could read and take action on immediately. If you're reading this book and you don't feel the urge to create a video based on all the practical advice available to you're here, then this is just not the medium for you. Enjoy this book as much, if not more, as I did writing it.

My wife and I bought this book for our son, who's an aspiring YouTuber. Before giving this to him, I wanted to read it to discuss afterwards with him. This book is AMAZING, filled with tons of tips and knowledge that applies far beyond Video Blogging. The life lessons and entrepreneurial nuggets are phenomenal and something that should be taught (but aren't) in our schools. I know he'll not only enjoy reading this book, but will walk away with so much more, than just how to be a better video blogger.I've been an entrepreneur whose had a few successes and more lessons over the last 20+ years, but I can truly say she sums so much up in a truly remarkable book. (think I highlighted something on almost every single page)If you want to learn how to be a great video blogger, this book will definitely do that for you, no doubt. The true bonus of this book is that you'll also be positioned to be a better entrepreneur and also individual with more confidence. Strongly recommend reading this well written, informative book ~ Mike Kawula.

Here's the good news. There is useful and actionable information in this book. Unfortunately, you have to slog through an awful lot of fluff in order to get to the meat of the topic. Amy's writing style is...well, let's just say we have an age and gender gap. I thought there was a lot of wasted discussion and didn't care for the way it was presented.Overall, this book could have been a good pamphlet when you boil it down to the useful information. Some of the information included suggestions that I'd already heard on YouTube from some other providers, so the material in Blog Like a Boss reinforced some concepts for me. I also gathered some new ideas and information.I particularly liked her suggestions of putting your ideas in Buckets (or Categories) and aligning them with popular post types. She demonstrated that it's easy to come up with a number of topics and headlines based upon this kind of matrix, and that's something I'm starting to use for my own material. My complaints about the book aren't about the solid material she includes. Instead, it's about the meandering beginning and the incredible amount of fluff in each section. Amy advises her readers to keep their YouTube content short and to the point. I wish she'd taken that advice when creating this book. I'd give it a much higher rating if it weren't such a poor reading experience.

I had high hopes for this book, and it is exactly what three stars means: okay. What I likeIt's an easy read. She's open and personable. There are some great tips and practical advice. What I don't like:It's too obviously self-published. I am a huge fan of self-publishing, but I believe the quality should be there. The font is too casual, the layout is too casual...it's just not professional feeling like I would have expected. She's waaaaaay too general in the chapter on equipment. In fact, it's so general as to be completely useless. She references videos to watch that have since been renamed on her site, so you win a prize if you can actually find them.Overall, I would not really recommend it. I like her YouTube channel, and I think I was looking for more.

I had been resisting the video vogue, but once I realized that I would need video to move forward with my message, I was urged to pick up this book. And I am so happy I did!I'm pleased to say that thanks to Amy's book, I've started making my first sucky videos! And, you know what? I'm getting more comfortable being filmed and seeing myself on film. They are not always going to suck; I believe Amy when she says that. I'm not a boss yet. Maybe more like low-level management. Actually, more like an intern. But I'm finding my voice and dressing the part. No where to go from here but up.

Great advice. I love her systematized approach. When I first started reading, I was a little worried because her tone is slightly "valley girl," but the advice is spot on.I've since checked out her YouTube channel as well. Her videos about how to vlog are some of the best I've seen. Now she's going in this "lifestyle" direction, which is cool, but doesn't resonate with me as much as her videos about how to make a video... Anyway, none of that has to do with the book. If you're looking for a book that gives you exact instructions about how to start and run a successful YouTube channel, this is it.

Amy does an amazing job in this book of explaining how and why video/vlogging works (and how to make it work for you). I loved her fun conversational tone. I'm so excited to get started with video myself and walked away with tons of actionable tips. Highly recommend!

I have not finished reading this book yet, but what I have read so far I give it 2 thumbs up.I am male in my 50s who is pretty much self taught on computers and other tech stuff I have. I have a blog and wanted to create a sister to it via video. So while looking for books on vlogging I kept coming back to this one. And I am glad I bought it. This young lady has it going on and even explains it well enough for us older folks to jump right in and join the youtube crowd. If you are thinking about vlogging, this book needs to be on your shelf.

I don't know why I sat on this book for a year before reading it. I could not put this book down as I took 1 night to read the whole thing. At the present time I don't have the interest to jump into video but this book is meant for so much more than video. There are lessons you can learn which can be applied to any aspect of your online journey. Amy is raw and straight to the point in this book. If you are looking for a cup of sugar, you will not find it here.Hats off to a job well done Amy.

#36,973 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Had read as a child (under the covers with a flashlight) and decided to revisit. Just as entertaining as I remembered. I laughed and cried and just plain enjoyed all over again.

I love these books and have read them all several times so I was excited to finally see them as ebooks. But where are the rest of the stories? I didn't want the "Cliff Notes" version and what is there isn't very well edited. I give these stories 5 stars, the ebook gets 3, very disappointed.

James Herriot's books have been favorites of mine for many years, so I was pleased to find them available in Kindle editions. However, it seems no one proof-read these editions after they were converted as I have found many incorrect words, punctuation marks where articles should be, and other indications of imperfect OCR conversion. These errors are not few; there are multiples present in every chapter of every book in this series! While in most cases it was easy to figure out the correct word (especially since I have read the print editions many times), these mistakes detract from the reading experience. I wouldn't mind as much if I wasn't paying full price, but when I'm charged as much as or more than the print edition, I have a problem with this!Readers, if this is your first experience with James Herriot's writings, do yourself a favor and buy the real thing. You'll get the full stories as they were meant to be read, with no guesswork.

I have had a few issues with Kindle books having typos, but these three editions are riddled with them, oftentimes to the point where I couldn't even guess the word. Though I have read and reread James Herriot for years and can't find a single fault with his original books (his stories should get 5+ stars), I am very unhappy with the quality of this Kindle set. I expect better quality (and proofreading!) from Amazon, especially at this price point.

James Herriot's stories of life as a Yorkshire vet need no introduction -- they must be among the most beloved books of all time. Now at long last they're available in e-book form. I got mine this afternoon and I'm happy to say that they are fully formatted with chapter stops and the text is clean and proofread. There's also a nice introductory essay by the author's son, and a bio at the end. The table of contents includes links to the introduction, the front cover of each of the three books, and the bio; to get to chapters within an individual book, you have to select that book from the table of contents, then click forward a few pages to get to that book's own table of contents, which is a little less convenient than being able to reach all the chapter stops from the main table of contents.Getting the first three books bundled together at a reasonable price is a perfect early holiday gift to us all!

I always loved the Herriot books as a child and was pleased to find this bargain bundle. His stories aren't poetry but they capture the joys and struggles of humanity better than any other author I know. More than once reading them I found myself tearing up or laughing hysterically despite having read them all before. There are 8 or 10 typos but they do little to dull Herriot's genius. Most books I wouldn't care about typos but there were more than a couple and Herriot deserves better.

I read all three of these books when they first were published- almost 50 years ago. Touching, fascinating, and absolutely hilarious at times-laugh out loud with stomach hurting and tears running down my face! I remembered some of the scenarios, but most of this was like reading new books, and they were as wonderful as I remembered. I had been recently thinking about them, when I got an e-mail from Amazon inviting me to look into these books, since I am an animal lover. My husband and I recently became parents of a huge, goofy GoldenDoodle after almost 30 years without any pets. I read much of the books with my 80 pound puppy in my lap-made the reading so much more meaningful. Highly recommend this series of extraordinary stories by an extraordinary man.

Hard to believe that it was almost 50 years ago when I started reading these books. I loved them as a young woman and even more as an old lady. And yet I know nothing about farming or the problems of being a rural vet and I've never been to Yorkshire in my life. What is it about these books that gives them such universal appeal?I think the key is that Alf Wight (who adopted the name James Herriot in the vain hope of remaining anonymous) was a truly modest man. Lacking the kind of ego that would have kept his thoughts focused on himself, he was free to concentrate on others. And he never tried to present himself as a heroic figure. When he relates a situation in which he looked like a first-class fool, he tells it with gleeful gusto. He lived an interesting, varied life, but he always saw himself as a simple country vet doing the best he could for his clients and neighbors.ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL introduces the reader to the very young, very unsure Scotsman, just graduated from college and transported to the strange (to him) world of the Yorkshire Dales. We see him as he moves in with the eccentric Farnon brothers and deals with their vagaries. We follow him as he begins to develop a bit of confidence in his skills and learns to love the people he's serving. Some of them, anyway. There are cranks and no-goods in any community and he never hesitated to include them in his stories. His romance with beautiful Helen Alderson and their marriage is woven into his story seamlessly as it should be. Successful marriages start when two people fit into each others's lives. His new wife accepted his commitment to his patients and the disruptions it would cause in their private lives. They were WWII generation young folks and they expected to work and sacrifice.ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL sees his life as a young married man and the birth of his children. ALL THINGS WISE AND WONDERFUL continues the story of the young family, with more tales of farmers and townsfolk. The author was a man who believed in seeing the best in people. His only stipulation was that they care about their animals. He was as happy treating the aged dog of an old man who couldn't pay as he was being served breakfast by a nobleman. Probably no profession other than a policeman sees a wider variety of people than a vet. And, like cops, vets see us when our defenses are down. These are wonderful books. If you are new to them, congratulations. If you're renewing an acquaintance with old friends, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Alf Wight is long since with the Angels, but his books continue to make people laugh and cry. What an enviable heritage!
